I’ll be damned if I don’t make use of having been born with an ultra-rare blood disorder. This is the answer that most frequently comes to mind when people ask why I left my 24 year career as a professional baker to study biotech. My heartfelt desire to make a contribution to rare blood disorder research and treatment is the fuel for my love of studying biotech. Being one of the first community college students ever awarded an Early In Career summer internship at Genentech SSF cemented my dedication to this career change. With a baking career that focused on high volume production of artisan viennoiserie (upwards of 10,000 pieces a week), I am able to handle the pressure of deadlines and have the stamina to meet those deadlines. I understand that this takes planning and organization. This ability to plan and organize has been invaluable in the pharmaceutical development labs I've worked in. Whether it’s working the lab bench during the course of undergraduate studies, or while working in the lab at Octant Bio, this is the favorite part of my day. I love being able to brainstorm with other scientists and have fully embraced a never stop learning view of life.
