Such type of vibrations appears to be triggered by a succession of distinct flow regimes around the cable surface throughout the drag crises. The flow transitions are strongly influenced by the orientation of the cable axis to the approaching flow, flow turbulence, surface roughness and possible deviation of the cable cross-section from the circular shape. The project scrutinizes the effect of these parameters for typical dry stay cables in services, as part of the ongoing international research campaign. The effect of helical fillets and other mitigating devices will also be addressed. The study combines experimental investigations, field observations and theoretical models.
