As an educator, I appropriate my subject matter and teaching materials to include a variety of learning styles, allowing all students the opportunity to succeed. Overall, I have found that the majority of students respond well to visual stimuli and hands-on activities. Form, space, concepts, history, construction methods, etc. become clearer to students if they can touch and see what is being taught.Charrettes offer hands-on learning as well as the opportunity to integrate cooperative learning, resulting in a fully integrated educational experience. Burton citing a report by the Secretary’s Commission, Department of Labor, Washington D.C. notes, “Being able to keep and to advance in our jobs or professions depends, to a great extent, upon our ability to work collaboratively" (p.28). Slavin (1995) confirms that “Cooperative learning promotes intrinsic motivation in students as it meets their natural need for interaction, for belonging, for power and control, and it provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate competence... [and] promotes the development of higher-level problem-solving abilities" (p.323). In addition to cooperative learning, I also employ Blooms process of mastery learning. Mastery learning allows me to identify corrective measures and asses where more instruction is needed for each individual student in order to promote mastery of the content. As an academic advisor, I act as a mentor to young professionals and emphasize the importance of communication. I actively promote internship and volunteer opportunities. Both build the students' confidence, expand their knowledge, and promote the application of skills. This helps students succeed in mastery of competencies within the construction management industry.To promote a collaborative work environment and an environment that supports mastery learning, I use imagery, videos that invoke emotion, real-life experiences, and hands-on exercises. I seek to elicit a response from students, engage them in the topic at hand, and develop their problem solving capabilities. I desire to instill passion and develop students’ higher order thinking, supporting students in achieving mastery of the curriculum, while encouraging collaboration with other students and professionals in their field of study.Slavin, R.E.
