I completed my PhD under the supervision of Dr. Suzanne Walker at Harvard Medical School in the Microbiology Department. My dissertation focused on target identification and characterization of small molecules identified in a high-throughput, pathway-directed, small molecule screen. The screen was designed specifically to identify compounds that are associated with the wall teichoic acid synthesis pathway; this pathway synthesizes wall teichoic acids, an important cell wall polymer. One of the lead compounds from the screen was found to have antibiotic properties, and the second small molecule lead from the screen was found to re-sensitize MRSA to beta-lactam antibiotics.

The project involved conducting informational interviews with key stakeholders in the development process, ranging from scientists in Discovery Chemistry to Project Team Leaders who oversee several programs at Genentech, followed by a formal presentation to my team to help determine how efforts should continue with this technology.
