My first steps into the world of art and design, beyond as a hobby, were during the three projects I worked on for the PRAY Program, starting when I was just a high school freshman. These were my first experiences in working on visual art collaboratively, with the other team members giving me feedback and asking for my input as an artist. Because I worked on these projects remotely, they also helped me develop my skills of managing my time and keeping up with progress independently.When I started looking for a job for the summer after my freshman year, at first I stuck to looking at customer service or custodial positions in my hometown. However, after some encouragement, I decided to try and find a design internship. HOURCAR caught my eye as soon as I saw it, because I'd learned of the organization years before. Since I strongly believe in the goals and values of the company, I decided to take a chance and apply, not expecting anything to come of it, but to my surprise I was hired. I was able to use my experience from working as PRAY's volunteer artist as I worked on design projects remotely. My practice on my high school's speech team helped me as well, giving me the confidence to engage with people at community events to talk with them about HOURCAR and the Evie program, which it operates. I appreciated the real-world design experience, but most of all I appreciated how HOURCAR showed me that I could be a designer and still work for causes and values that I believe in.
