After Hurricane Katrina, Houston housed 26,000 evacuees at the Astrodome. As a volunteer, I noticed that there was no special assistance available to military veterans, and established a Veteran's Advocacy Center. The original mission was to locate veterans and identify critical needs; but as I recruited other military volunteers, our mission grew in scope. We quickly established SOPs for assisting veterans on a prioritized case-by-case basis. At our peak, over 30 volunteers were operating out of the VAC, not including active military units that assisted us independently. We officially liased with the Astrodome Command Center and the VA. We located, logged, and assisted over 320 veterans and families. The VAC handled urgent medical issues, disability paychecks, housing, missing persons, and prescription disbursement, as well as comfort concerns. The VAC was the only resource for veterans inside the Astrodome until the 10th day, when VA personnel established a presence.
