I am an economist, opinion writer and author of four books. My economic research focuses on the macroeconomic implications of China’s rise for western economies. I have been a teaching professor at New York University and lectured at Tsinghua University in Beijing. My most recent book, The Chinese Birdcage – How China’s Rise Almost Toppled the West, was published by Palgrave Macmillan in New York. In addition, I am a columnist for de Volkskrant and Project Syndicate. My work has appeared in newspapers and magazines including Foreign Policy, The New York Times, The Financial Times, and Le Monde. I am the cofounder and was president of the board of an NGO that advocates more women in top jobs. I am fluent in English and Dutch and I speak Chinese (Mandarin), French and Italian.
