EcoActive is a wonderful Charity which does a wide range of Environmental Education projects in Hackney and other areas of London in Schools, community centres, housing associations, local residents associations, community events etc. They are responsible for delivering the Recycling Education programme in all schools in Hackney. I work on a freelance basis for the farm and run workshops for school groups on food growing and chickens. The workshops typically last between one hour and two hours and are hands on and great fun.

Since returning to the UK after working with VSO in Tanzania, I have concentrated on working outdoors as much as possible with schools on food growing, cooking and arranging farm visits.

This was a fantastic pilot project involving 15 schools in London - Primaries, Secondaries, a PRU and an SEN group. The aim of the project was to connect young people with where their food comes from and help them set up a social enterprise and run school farmers' markets - thereby connecting with local businesses and producers and with the wider school community. I carried out a baseline survey of the level of English of a group of Science Teachers in Lower Secondary in Zanzibar and Pemba alongside a group of Zanzibari Teacher Trainers. This then informed a Teacher Training Programme jointly by the Aga Khan Foundation and USAid in Zanzibar.

I worked alongside local Education Advisors in a rural teacher training centre in a village in the middle of the Island of Zanzibar. We ran Teacher Training workshops in our area which covered 18 schools. I focused particularly on helping to improve the level of English that was being taught and helped produce an activity based set of English text books for Standards 1-3. It was a challenge and a real privilege to work with such wonderful, welcoming people.
