Research support for the Director of Research of the Centre for Development and Environment (SUM).

Internship with the ICLA Global team. NRC's ICLA work supports people to claim and exercise their rights through information, counselling, legal assistance, collaborative dispute resolution, capacity building and advocacy.Key responsibilities:- Leading a project to uncover and analyse strategic advocacy work and processes across 30 countries and recommendations to build strategic advocacy capacity.- Developing strategic communication tools to capture and promote ICLA's work.- Running capacity building seminars on strategic advocacy at the ICLA Global Seminar.- Collating practices and learning tools on women and housing, land and property rights to support country offices to undertake gender-sensitive programming.

Through this role I supported policy change in target countries by developing investment case analyses on tobacco, alcohol and health tax policies. I also conducted desk research and drafted reports on a variety of topics including tobacco and illicit trade and neglected tropical diseases.

Spilt Milk Law is a boutique New Zealand law firm focussed on helping high-impact projects get off the ground. Our theory of change involves getting startups and social enterprises access to legal support sooner, setting our clients up for greater impact beyond the short run. This was a part time contract I completed remotely while I was travelling in Asia. I helped to build the practice by advising on a wide range of legal issues including immigration, family and employment.

Part of a small unit tasked with designing and implementing a reformed national health system. I was one of four policy analysts responsible for developing and passing the key legislation establishing the new system. My role involved:- Rapid development of policy solutions relating to health system design, governance, constitutional law and indigenous self-determination.- Supporting policy and legal teams to ensure the Unit complied with all Parliamentary processes and laws.- Writing more than 20 Cabinet papers, briefings, speeches and Ministerial responses for the Prime Minister and Ministers of Health and Finance.- Managing stakeholders on highly political and time sensitive issues.- Supporting the Parliamentary Select Committee to scrutinise legislation via oral and written advice and analysis.- Establishing and providing policy support to expert advisory committees.

Within the government department for land and public works I provided expert advice to Statutory Officers and other government departments on public land issues. My role involved:- Generating solutions to complex and sensitive historical land issues including indigenous reparations, compulsory acquisition, and customary rights.- Developing more than 50 regulatory and internal policy documents.- Working closely with external stakeholders including other parts of the public sector, community organisations, and indigenous groups.- Supporting development of cross-government solutions and strategic plans for use of the public land estate.- Developing knowledge management processes to build capacity and efficiently share my team’s technical expertise with the wider organisation.
