Leader of the John Lewis Partnership Registry, a function unique to the Partnership and set out in the business’s Constitution, laid down by John Spedan Lewis in 1928. The function of Registry is to be an independent critical friend of the Chairman and executive and to ensure that the voice of Partners is heard and represented in Board meetings. Also support the Partnership Council, one of the Partnership’s Governing Authorities (with the Chairman and the Board). Functionally the role includes leading the teams that manage Partner Assurance, Appeals Partner Support, Retired Partners, the Partnership Council secretariat and the coaches that support the four levels of democracy throughout the business, assurance for all Group functions and the Insight team which manages the business-wide Partner survey.

Bracknell

On the Waitrose Management Board, when Waitrose increased its market share from 4.9% to 5.6%. Reported to the Managing Director of Waitrose. During this period the business opened 60 branches (totalling 348), created the My Waitrose customer reward scheme and bought the Duchy brand. As Personnel Director brought recommendations to the Waitrose Board on the long-term deliverables around Partner Strategy, including a new talent and inclusion strategy, ensuring the business remained legally compliant and a safe place to work and operating within the policy framework of the Partnership Board. Delivered a major Waitrose head office reorganisation, streamlining functions and achieving 5% reduction in costs. Led major changes to pay structures for 65,000 Partners.Led the Personnel Directorate through two major reorganisations. The first in 2012 introduced Business Partnering and Training and Development as functions (overall team of 160). Subsequently in 2017 the Waitrose and John Lewis Personnel functions were merged into a single Group function, reporting to the Director of Personnel.

Bracknell

Led the Registrar team and Council Office team for Waitrose (60 heads). Acted as critical friend to the Managing Director, Waitrose and the Waitrose Management Board. Reorganised the Waitrose Council from 350 to 75 councillors, introducing a new level of democracy in Waitrose – local Forums.

Deputised for Partners’ Counsellor. Supported as critical friend and trusted confidante the Chairman, both Managing Directors and the Director of Personnel whilst new in role at the same time. Led work to halve the numbers of Registrars in the field.
