Digital Strategy Manager

Wellington & Wairarapa, New Zealand

I managed and mentored a digital and design team that communicated the journey to create sustainable support for at-risk kids. It was a busy, demanding environment where top of mind was the user experience, information design and COPE - create once, publish everywhere. Everyday was about trouble-shooting, liaising with the business and creating compelling content for the web, intranet, social, e-letters or print. I liked to think with my 12 creative ninjas we could do almost anything.

Sep 2017 - Jul 2021

Digital Strategist

Wellington & Wairarapa, New Zealand

MSD I facilitated the user research to help scope the redesign of msd.govt.nz. This required creating a core audience matrix, briefing prospective providers, gathering business requirements and managing an external supplier to deliver a resource that will inform the transformation. ORANGA TAMARIKI I was the content lead behind the web presence for the new Ministry of Vulnerable Children, Oranga Tamariki established in April 2017. Strategy + digital The web is the new ministry's window to the world and it’s through this channel many will be seeking to understand a new model that follows the radical overhaul of Children, Youth and Family. The greatest challenge from a communication perspective was balancing the high aspirations for a future child centred system with the fact we're on a journey, and it could take 4-5 years to effect real change. The digital challenge was to deliver an MVP (minimum viable product) that will evolve to be an engaging go-to, mobile friendly source of the truth. This work involved bringing 3 existing websites under the one umbrella and accommodating a diverse range of audience groups within a tight timeframe.Agency, stakeholder management & executionMy role included working closely with Clemenger BBDO to align the content and user experience with the Oranga Tamariki brand strategy. I oversaw the creation and repurposing of all content types (text, video, forms, photography, infographics etc) working with subject matter experts and those managing the transition.

This included stakeholder research, information design, content strategy, and staff training.Ministry of Education: research and content for new parent web channel using a question and answer content model At the heart of my work at Experience was the user. What engages them? What do they need to know? What do they want to do online? What makes a great user experience? RESEARCH: I led the gathering of user insights (interviews, synthesis, analysis + reporting). Talked to subject matter experts and reviewed analytics to understand the user needs and how these fitted with client goals. UX: I created personas and profiles to understand who the audience was. I then identified key user journeys and tested these using prototypes – helping to validate, refine and validate again. CONTENT: I led content projects and delivered: strategies, audits, information architectures, models and reviews of communication channels. I used a raft of mediums: plain English text, graphics, video, screencast, audio, interactive tools and pictures. Content needed to be engaging and viewable on any device.

Communications Manager

Wellington

I oversaw communications for this listed company that develops and sells beautiful easy-to-use accounting software for small business. Xero was (and still is) rapidly expanding offshore and I managed global content as well as relationships with PR agencies in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Content marketingThis role showed me the power of content marketing, how to curate and create relevant, aspirational content for an emerging audience. As part of this role I managed the company’s blog; produced videos; crafted content for the web and regular customer-facing digital newsletters/product updates. I also trained customer care staff to use a 'voice' true to the Xero brand. Not salesy, corporate or technical but friendly and helpful. Media relations on a global scale was a big focus too.
