About Helena Deakin

I have experience working as part of a team and autonomously, using decision-making skills and critical thinking to plan, implement, and evaluate patients care. This has enabled me to priorities patient care, work closely with other professions, maintain patient records accurately, and provide holistic care to each patient. Through this, I have been able to build my confidence, and apply the knowledge I have gained into the practice setting. To me, it is vital to take part in further training and education whilst working, as this has provided me with further knowledge to develop and increase my competency as a nurse.I want to develop my skills further by working autonomously managing my own caseload, as well as working collaboratively with my colleges to provide the best care for my patients.

In my current role as a Practice Nurse, I deliver evidence-based practice care to my patients with acute and long term conditions; as well as providing them and their families with condition management support and health promotion; in the hope of preventing further deterioration. I believe this is an integral part of the role. My current duties include; Immunisations and vaccinations- working within PGDs, Cervical cytology, Contraception consultations and injections, Phlebotomy, Asthma reviews, ECGs, and wound management.I have completed a post graduate diploma in the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and now manage these patients for the practice, completing reviews, making treatment recommendations and referring on to secondary care or the GP where applicable. I have also completed my identification of minor illness in primary care to help expand my role and knowledge, increasing my autonomy. In September 2022 I completed my Non Medical Prescribing with Sheffield Hallam University.

  • Nhs
    Registered Nurse
    Nhs Sep 2017 - May 2019
    Derby, United Kingdom
Royal Derby Hospital-Cardiology ward. I have experience of working as part of a team and autonomously, using decision making skills and critical thinking to plan, implement and evaluate patients care. This has enabled me to priorities patient care, work closely with other professions, maintain patients records accurately and provide holistic care to each patient. Through this I have been able to build my confidence, and apply the knowledge I have gained into the practice setting. One part of my role is to monitor and assess a patients condition. This could be through their vital signs, their mobility, skin integrity and communication needs. These are all clearly and accurately documented, following the NMC guidelines. I am then able to refer my patient on to the appropriate care clinician if I believe there to be a concern regarding this. I strongly believe that it is important to work inter-professionally, as this provides the best outcome for the patient. As part of my previous role I have also been put in charge of a ward. This has enabled me to build on my leadership skills, as I am responsible for the nursing and medical team on the ward that day. As well as ensuring the nursing staff are managing with their workload, I also facilitate ward round, liaising with other medical professionals, as well as patient flow to organise the safe admissions, transfers and discharges of patients to and from the ward. This experience has been very beneficial to me, as its has developed my communication, organisation and time keeping skills. As well as allowing me to work inter-professionally and under pressure, with positive feedback.I have also had the opportunity to work with Health care assistants and student nurses, enabling me to develop my teaching skills. As it is a specialised area, I believe it is important for them to be equipped with the knowledge to care for the patients, as they require different treatment than would be given in other areas.
