About Helena Hounsel

ENFP, Empath, Social Storyteller. Behind the scenes making magic happen: Most of you know me for the communities and brands I've built. Community and brand builder at heart; advising early stage startups, helping launch / rebrand companies, scaling social strategies, motivating / training teams and building meaningful community.True Story: It wasn't until after I graduated with my Marketing degree that I realized "Marketing" was a way to get people to buy things they didn't need--the thought honestly never crossed my mind. Ever since, I've been on a mission to work with brands that actually bring value, hope, and community to the lives of women. It's what I live for. I've found myself surrounded by women's health conversations and I never want to leave.I am a believer in organic community building (and doing the brand work!). I've seen the impact trying to grow too quickly has and what happens when founders lose the heart of what got them (and their employees) out of bed in the morning. That is why I thrive in early stage companies and why I love growing teams and brands from the ground up. Most recently, I added product development to my skill set at EO Products. I jumped at the chance to drive the product roadmap years in advance bringing the intentions of the brand to the ingredients and scents and messaging from product conception. You can now find me using my superpowers for good consulting for brands and entrepreneurs. Former in house brands: EO, Everyone, Brandless, LevoFormer Clients: One Medical, EO, Glassdoor, Seeso, BritBox, New Story, Leila Janah, Sama, Laxmi, gr8nola, Levo.Things my best friends know about me:I could eat ramen, dumplings, or fried rice every day (but now I'm gluten free for my thyroid, le sigh)Self-proclaimed Skincare Addict (but really people do come to me for my beauty routine)Obsessed with the wine + crime podcast (you can thank the pandemic)I worked front desk at SoulCycle and absolutely loved itCorgi videos bring me joy I'm proud to be PolishI love my MomThis is me. If you have some time grab some popcorn, my LinkedIn shares a lot about my journey.

  • Brandless, Inc.

    Brandless, Inc. Mar 2018 - Aug 2019
    Lindon, Utah, Us
Lead the team that inspired, engaged, and developed incredibly strong relationships with an online community of 1M+ strong. As Brandless became known for their engaged community, I felt like a proud Mom. I’ve kept in touch with many of the Ambassadors that helped bring this company to life and stayed loyal to the products and price points they launched with. Although our Facebook group is no longer, we felt like a family. The new owners still use the content from our era, proving Evergreen content is 👑.
  • Brandless, Inc.

Launch 7.11.17 | I was brought on to consult 3 months before launch to support the community and social launch strategy. It was an experience, one I will never forget and will always be thankful for what it taught me. Brandless was a fresh approach to consumer commerce, launching with all $3 items. I joined the team full time on launch day. “We are a community of people who believe that everyone can live better through the stuff we buy and how we buy it."“Better everything, for everyone.”
  • Seeso
    Social Media Consultant
    Seeso Jan 2017 - Jun 2017

I had the pleasure of managing all fires for Seeso’s comedy geek (setting the standard for a < 24 hour turnaround time) while molding a signature tongue-in-cheek social tone. Crafting an ownable and unique brand voice like this is all about consistency and care. I drafted and created a much needed social bible of response templates for the Seeso service team so that all communication felt on-brand and authentically geeky.

  • New Story
    Head Of Marketing And Growth
    New Story Jan 2016 - Dec 2016
    Atlanta, Ga, Us
At SXSW 2018 New Story unveiled their first 3-D printed home. In 2016, this was only a speck of an idea. I joined the team as their first full time hire, fully dedicated to connecting donors to homeless families in danger to create life changing stories. As a Y Combinator company, New Story was a step ahead of the rest. When you get to have a call with Coca-Cola's VP of Innovation and Entrepreneurship for advice, the access to experts in their fields was unrivaled and the insights invaluable. I worked day and night to position the company as a transparency thought leader by cultivating PR relationships, crafting compelling narratives, and drafting the script for their first brand video. In response to Hurricane Matthew, we launched the #NFL4Haiti campaign to engage with Haitian-born NFL players and cultivated influencer relationships and community around players funding a “home per NFL sack”. We raised $928k and even caught the attention of TMZ.😉

  • Levo League
    Head Of Social And Community
    Levo League Jan 2015 - Jan 2016
    New York, Ny, Us
Levo was my heart and soul wrapped into one. It was my first child (you never forget your 1st 1M+ community) and it was a living, breathing example of MY WHY - elevating and uplifting women in their careers.I wrote the below when I was 25 and I wanted to share ALL that I had done for Levo. I’ve grown up and now get to mentor, support, and meld the next generation of leaders and I use all the lessons I learned here at Levo every day (and every time I negotiate). All the keywords. • Levo League
    Community Manager
    Levo League Dec 2013 - Jan 2015
    New York, Ny, Us
Although Levo is no longer, it lives on in the minds of so many Local Levo leaders and women in the space - and I’m so proud of that. I remember being at Brit + Co and the CMO of Soulcycle (love her) of course new Levo. It lost its way but it started out on a mission that so many other amazing companies and founders and communities have been able to bring to life. I just wish we could have harnessed more of what we built for the future of women in the workplace. One thing I can’t help but mention is Levo taught me the world of editorial in NYC, because they were content wizards. (Hi Meredith Lepore!) For a time I worked under Kathleen Harris who came from Real Simple and managed our editorial team of 12. She helped us grow our audience size by 7x.I learned how to curate, communicate, and promote never ending content. IFTTT and Buffer were my BFFs and many other platforms that do not exist today. Here are all the community manager things I did. Online community manager dedicated to carrying out and executing social media strategies. Curates content to all social channels to optimize engagement with the Levo audience. Sparks conversation that will positively impact and inspire the Levo audience. Works across editorial and sales / engagement teams to provide insights and feedback into content planning, campaign ideation and sales collateral. In charge of curating and promoting content on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Pinterest.
  • Levo League
    Marketing Assistant, Local Levo
    Levo League Jun 2013 - Dec 2013
    New York, Ny, Us
Maxie McCoy - do you know her? Hot pink suit, stunning red hair, and a heart of pure gold. She hired me from SF after I had just moved to NYC. 28 days later I found myself in a overpriced apartment and a new city and I had zero clue what I was doing. But I was living and breathing my mission and that’s all that mattered to me. Together, Maxie and I grew Levo to over 30 cities with ~50 leaders in each - diverse, inspiring, heck, they are leading professional women’s spaces in their cities to this day. We provided them the support and resources and access to other like-minded women and they hosted 300+ in person events a year. Did I mention we were global? I see London and France. 😉25 yo me Resume things. Supported the Director of Local Levo to facilitate marketing, promotion, and execution of local events in over 20 cities, focusing on community engagement, growth, and support. Responsibilities included the lead generation, vetting, and on-boarding process of all new community leaders, on-going communication and support of leaders and sponsors, event marketing and social promotion of all monthly events and workshops, and graphics requests for visual materials.
  • Farmers Restaurant Group
    Marketing Consultant
Farmers Restaurant Group May 2013 - Jun 2013
    Washington, Dc, Us
For my first job out of college, I followed my Entrepreneurship class Professor Dan Simons to THE FARM. I had received a few job offers at marketing agencies and my gut said they weren’t the right fit. So, I joined the family at Farmer’s Restaurant Group, a concept development and restaurant management company. They were changing the game with a platform of farm-inspired American food and drink in modern, upscale casual, and eco-friendly settings. As a fan of the restaurants (and fried chicken) I felt like they were bringing a different kind of energy to DC restaurants and I knew I wanted to be a part of it. I was a project-based marketing intern that supported the launch of their first cookbook. You could say it sparked my interested in launching new things from the ground up - the fast paced and unknown - I loved it. With a dedicated team, I worked with some of the best restaurant marketers in the heart of DC and it showed me the drive you had to have to bring ideas to reality.I also got a peek inside Vucurevich Simons Advisory Group (VSAG), Dan’s restaurant and hospitality consulting and development firm, to get a glimpse at how they were able to bring Founding Farmers and Farmers Fishers Bakers to life.
  • Jwt Atlanta
    Assistant Strategist
    Jwt Atlanta Jan 2013 - Apr 2013
I come from a Military background (two uncles played football at West Point) so I was taught early on the importance of respect, diligence, and order. At JWT, I worked directly with Mike Zeliff PhD to conduct quantitative and qualitative research in the area of military substance abuse through data analysis, identifying media consumption behaviors and key influencers of Marines under the age of 24 with an E-5 pay-grade. I was tasked with providing a summary of findings into the risks associated with different stages in a military career. Enhanced written communication skills with creation of positioning statements, creative briefs, and client proposals were of key importance. This work and these insights are so important and I'm proud that I was able to support where I could.
  • Ted Baker
    Sales Associate
    Ted Baker Sep 2012 - Dec 2012
    Gb
I should have been a full time salesman. In my second week of employment during a 2 day sale, I sold $20k worth of merchandise, earning top salesman in the Chevy Chase Bloomingdales, #3 nationally and top 10 in Ted Baker globally. Like, what?! I didn't work based off commission so I can't say it inspired me to stay in the role. However, I did nail it in delivering top-quality service as a personal shopper, placing a premium on a high touch shopping environment. Working *in* Bloomingdales also sparked my love for luxury, design, good taste, and even better... a good sale. Words of affirmation is not my love language but the above resulted in praise for attention to individual client needs through extensive product and brand knowledge, which I didn't hate.
  • Conde Nast
    Vanity Fair - Fashion Closet
    Conde Nast May 2012 - Aug 2012
    New York, Ny, Us
WHAT A DREAM. Working in the VF fashion closet was the highlight of my college years. Did I mention I got the job because of my Pinterest page... ya girl's got taste. The best part honestly was getting to visit every single one of New York's fashion houses surrounded by the magic of New York minus the part about carrying white furs in 100 degree weather in the dead of summer. I managed coordination and organization of time-sensitive samples for photo shoot preparation and high profile events, and felt fancy getting to ride in black cars with coveted designers latest fashions. I can't even start with the Tom Ford suits. Impeccable in every way. I digress. I was even chosen for special assignments with extremely expensive jewelry that obviously needed their own handler and car and probably cost more than all my worldly possessions without a doubt. I've always loved a good mood board so I thoroughly enjoyed conducting research on fashion trends and in demand products to construct inspiration boards for Editors. Some of them definitely scared me, but in a really good way? They saw the perfectionist in me and chose me to spearhead the restructuring and optimization of their contact database with over 2,000 designers. I preferred the drama of the pre-shoot madness. It gave me life.My future in fashion magazines ultimately came down to an intern session with Graydon Carter where I asked him where he thought VF would go in this digital age, to which he didn't have the best response for a hungry social savvy young adult like myself. I found a yearning for a more female lead space but can't deny I would have loved for Radhika Jones to be the EIC that 21 year old was looking up to.
  • Cmn Pr
    Public Relations Consultant
    Cmn Pr May 2012 - Aug 2012
At CMN PR, I got to work with one of the best; Carla Nikitaidis. Here I helped oversee the facilitation of Levo’s re-branding and renovation of office space - a perfect job for a "future" interior design minor/dreamer turned Marketer. I independently researched ways to position Levo through merchandising and design and had a lot of fun with it, even getting to pitch proposed recommendations of strategy direct to the Founder/CEO right out of college. I created variations of logos and designs for custom orders and learned the precision these orders take... and what a pain they could be. Again, I learned the importance of building real relationships with our vendors and contractors as the daily point-person. Being a tough cookie helps with negotiations. Helps if you have a sweet side too.
  • Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, Llp
    Marketing Clerk
Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, Llp Feb 2011 - Aug 2011
    Washington, Dc, Us
If there is anywhere to learn the value of a brand name or brand identity, it's at an intellectual property law firm. Go figure. At Finnegan, I helped managed the workflow of high volume requests by compiling RFP responses and pitch presentation supporting materials. I achieved quality control by proofing collateral materials for errors; scrutinizing and detailing imperfections and typos, while maintaining strict adherence to deadlines and remaining creative, resourceful, and flexible in a team environment. While here, I also messed up an Excel sheet with thousands of rows of contact information because I filtered the wrong way. An error I have never made again. I now try and stay away from spreadsheets for my own personal health. Yes, it was all as professional as it sounds.
  • American Cancer Society
    Hope Lodge Assistant
American Cancer Society May 2010 - Jul 2010
    Atlanta, Ga, Us
In 2010 I had my first "launch". I had the honor of working directly with my Mom, then acting Hope Lodge Director (and two time breast cancer survivor) to help open the Hope Lodge. This sanctuary acts as a type of Ronald McDonald house for adults coming to seek treatment at local hospitals and allows their family to stay with them to bring comfort from home. This was one of the most rewarding growth opportunities I have had and brought me so perspective to my life. I had been on the family side watching my Mom get treatment, but I didn't appreciate that life experience until I was able to give personalized tours sharing my story, connecting to others with my own lived experience. When you find yourself arranging last minute accommodations and acting as the first contact for some of these incoming guests and potential sponsors, you learn to listen and be of service wherever you can, answering questions thoughtfully, and taking and resolving guest complaints in stride.

tl;dr People trusted me with their kids... you can trust me with your brand. ;)Real talk - I made way more money babysitting than I did in my first few "real" jobs. Looking back, this was my first experience in managing crisis comms and the Ritz Carlton "Be Remarkable" Training taught me the important role that customer satisfaction plays in the overall emotional connection your loyalists have with your brand. I'm proud that my Kidtown clientele and many of my teachers trusted me with their families. I was even trusted to come on board as a lifeguard and camp counselor children’s camp so you know I can handle high pressure situations and lots of commotion with ease... well, with experience. As always: cited for an upbeat attitude, disposition, and passion for creating meaningful relationships and memorable special events. If you got all the way to this gem, thanks for reading and I'm looking forward to meeting you and learning more about the work you do. Cheers!
