Jul 2007 - Jun 2009

Project Manager, Cute

Cambridge, England, Gb

This high profile project funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) demanded high quality online courseware and tutor training for teachers of English across China in an integrated online with face-to-face learning methodology. This role involved liaising with a film crew, authors, designers and online developers to ensure that briefs and deadlines were met as well as proof-reading and editing materials, being aware of copyright issues, working to budget and at times advising the Director on the appropriate way forward. I worked closely with Tsinghua University, their partner universities, the Cambridge teacher trainers and the technical team both in the UK and in China to ensure that a teacher training programme could be delivered on time during the 18-month project. To this end, constant contact with my counterpart at Tsinghua University was a must to coordinate and organise the 20 Chinese teachers of English from across seven universities in China. This training was delivered through face-to-face sessions (both in Beijing and Cambridge) as well as online. In parrallel, I managed the production of high level English online, interactive, multi-media courseware for the Chinese academics we were working with. Both the training programme and the online courseware were developed following a thorough needs analysis and in depth discussions with our Chinese counterparts. In addition, a teachers’ online interactive module was developed to meet the needs of the programme. This role demanded high levels of communication, coordination and time-management skills as well as great sensitivity and diplomacy to meet the enormous demands and challenges of this government funded cross-cultural project. As well as working behind the scenes I was also involved in delivering part of the tutor training programme. The project was externally evaluated and concluded that ‘it has provided an example of a highly succcessful Sino-UK eLearning project’.

Nov 2005 - Jul 2007

Project Manager, E@Yf

Cambridge, England, Gb

English @ Your Fingertips is online courseware to help teach English at three different levels (Intermediate, Higher and Advanced). I was responsible from the outset to ensure that the film production team understood and carried out their brief and to deadline. Often needing to negotiate actors, film locations, permissions, copyright and budget as well as, on occasion, working closely with the producer to re-negotiate the agreed filming schedule and content to better meet the demands of the project and marketing brief. Working closely with the project authors to deliver clear and helpful interactive, online activities which allowed learners to engage with the audio / visual material and develop their English language abilities through a series of interesting and useful online activities. My main responsibilities included working, at a distance, with a number of course writers and proof-readers, discussing the course content and implementing the schedule to produce over 340 hours of online activities. Everything was checked thoroughly and cross-referenced with the brief and existing course content. Where necessary, work was edited. I also liaised with the project’s design team in order to ensure that the courseware was given an appropriate identity, a suitable ‘look’. Furthermore, I worked very closely with the online developers from the development of the overall framework to ensure that the brief and deadlines were met. I proof-read all content and provided or commissioned necessary rewrites as appropriate. This project demanded excellent time management and communication skills as, at any one time, I was managing the workload and demands of more than 20 people located across the UK and abroad. Deadlines were tight and content had to be accurate, consequently an eye for detail was also crucial.

Oct 2003 - Nov 2005

Design And Publications Assistant

International Transport Workers' Federation

This job developed from formatting and designing materials in a variety of languages including French, German, Spanish, Swedish to coordinating and managing the workload of the in-house printer and the production and distribution of flag-ship publications in up to ten languages (including Mandarin, Japanese and Tagalog). The work involved liaising with both internal and external people (writers, designers, printers, photographers, distribution companies and tradeunionists), ensuring that everyone met their brief and deadlines as well as requesting quotations, negotiating budgets and making researched reccomendations. In the absence of the Web Manager, I updated the internet site using basic HTML. My other duties included supervising temporary workers, brainstorming, developing and producing exhibition displays and materials for political campaigns, writing meeting reports, initiating and developing an electronic database for a new electronic image storage and retrieval programme as well as maintaining stock levels of promotional items and publications.
