About Heather Hope Kuruvilla

I am an advocate for equity and access in cultural and educational spaces. A strong speaker, dedicated team member, and accomplished writer, I question what role our educational and cultural organizations play in communities and what they can mean to individuals.Heather Hope is the past program coordinator and instructor at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, serving in their M.A. in Arts Administration for 7 years. Her program coordinator duties included serving as academic advisor to all students in the program, leading curricular initiatives (such as the development of a 4+1 accelerated M.A. and developing the foundation for a series of professional certificates for working professionals), and supporting prospective students as they explored the offerings available to them in the department. She developed and proposed curricular adjustments to better meet the needs of students and guide them through the program faster, and worked collaboratively with offices across campus.Heather Hope's instructional duties at Kutztown included the development of initial offerings of their Arts and Civic Engagement and Arts and Ethical and Legal Issues in the Arts courses, which she taught for every offering from the program's inception through her departure, and also collaboratively updated the capstone Graduate Seminar course to meet the needs of both the M.A. in Arts Administration and M.Ed in Art Education students. She also taught courses at the undergraduate level, including First Year Seminar (with offerings focused on artist books and critical and reflective explorations of self-identity) and Women in the Arts. Heather Hope has also taught at the graduate and undergraduate levels in arts administration and museum studies/professions at the Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, Seton Hall University, and the University of Kentucky. She is published in the areas of museum deaccessioning and the Visual Artists Rights Act and the second edition of her book, A Legal Dictionary for Museum Professionals, is available from Rowman & Littlefield. Her most recent work, a film discussion guide for the documentary Pardon Me, co-written with Dra. Leslie Sotomayor III, is forthcoming. Her work in arts, engagement, and community can be seen through the Illinois nonprofit Agate Creatives.
