As Head of Mining for open pit mines for Africa, my objective was to advice and guide the seven open pit mines in my portfolio to deliver excellent performance in the technical and operational disciplines. My responsibilities included: Review and observe operational practices at mines and advice on improvements. Identify improvement opportunities and assist with implementation and measurement Do operational benchmarking with similar operations. Do mining equipment (HME) requirement & selection studies. Review & approve HME capital. Participate in OEM liaison. Participation in liaison meetings with mining contractors and maintain sound working relationships. Give technical advice on forms of contract and review tender adjudications and final contract documents. Determine contract management guidelines and develop & implement contract control measures. Technical reviews and advice on the development of LOM and short term mining plans Review and sign-off open pit Reserves annually at all seven mines. Lead or participate in expansion and operational improvement projects. Manage and guide outside consultants and contractors. Participate in reviewing significant geotechnical risk assessments. Advice on slope failure management. Selection of professional mining staff and development of young professionals to ensure competent teams on the mines.

Namibia

Navachab Gold Mine was the first open pit mine in the AngloGold Ashanti stable. This small mine in Namibia provided excellent managerial development including aggressive pit slope management, contractor mining and difficult labour relations. The mine continuously outperformed company targets and set the standard for future open pit mines in AngloGold Ashanti.As Assistant Manager I carried the responsibility of the mining operation and the technical services department. This included: Acting as General Manager for extended periods during vacancies in the position Leading and/or supporting bi-annual JV meetings Leading strategic and LOM planning studies Leading mine expansion projects Mining contractor management and control Taking continuous improvement interventions to add value to the bottom line Department budgeting and cost control Staffing and personnel development Leading annual wage negotiations with the local mining trade union Take a leading role in the small mining community, including leading the governing body of the local private school

New Vaal Colliery

I was responsible for the coal mining operation at this large opencast mine, delivering 16 million tonnes of low grade coal to the 3600MW Lethabo power station near Vereeniging. My responsibilities included the coaling operation, sand overburden and sandstone interburden removal with truck and shovel fleets as well as pit dewatering.
