I am currently (2023, 2024) active as master thesis supervisor in the area of International Relations.

As SP member of Dutch Senate, I joined the Unified European Left group (UEL) in PACE. I was a member of the Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development, the Committee on Migration, and of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy.My term will end after the June 2019 session.

On October 4th, 2016, I was sworn in as member of the Dutch Senate or Upper House of Parliament, for the Socialist Party (Socialistische Partij). My main areas were 'Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development Cooperation', 'Immigration and Asylum' 'European Affairs', 'Financial Affairs' and 'Economic Affairs'. My term ended on June 4th, 2019.

The VU - Renmin Minor in Contemporary China Studies provides a semester of intensive studies in Contemporary China Studies for VU Amsterdam third year bachelor students. The programme is coordinated by the VU Faculty of Social Sciences and administered by the VU International Office. I chaired the Department of Political Science in the period September 2010 - March 2013. In March 2013, the Department of Political Science merged with the Department of Public Administration. I chaired the newly formed Department of Political Science and Public Administration (with some 55 academic staff, 15 PhD candidates and 3 secretaries, with a combined annual budget of E 2 miilion) from March 2013 until my retirement per 30 September 2014.
