In this voluntary role I communicated with women (mainly in Spanish) who used our services to learn more about their experiences with us and gain valuable feedback. In doing so, the Knowledge Officer and myself created reports for the charity and relevant organisations and sponsors, which in turn allowed us to apply for more funding. I also worked on our organisation’s social media (Facebook and Twitter), having created a social media strategy for a fundraiser that aided in reaching our target donation goal of £10,000.

After collecting them from school we ensured that they were fed at the centre and given the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun and engaging activities. Because of the nature of this role, I completed an online safeguarding course with NSPCC, which gave me a thorough insight into the importance of child protection in the workplace.

Assisting the Live Editor by contributing to ideas and plans to develop and strengthen our section of the magazine. We planned and executed Edgetival 2017, a mini festival showcasing local artists and bands. I also edited written content - previews and reviews of live events from comedy acts to festivals.

I worked with a fellow student also on a work placement in Mexico to ensure that all Year Abroad students in the country had an outlet to express their worries, concerns and feedback. We primarily used a Facebook group as recommended by the university, as we were all based in different parts of Mexico. The role involved listening to and assessing my group's feedback, sharing my own thoughts and advice, and discussing issues raised by my peers with the Modern Languages faculty at our university.

During my Year Abroad as part of my degree I spent my time working as an English Language Assistant with Language undergraduates of a high level of English training to become teachers. My job involved assisting their teachers, leading conversation clubs where we discussed and debated a variety of topics in English whilst also learning about British culture, and organising a Film Club where we watched and discussed American/British films.

Mallorca

For one month, I was an au pair for Mallorcan family looking after their four-year-daughter and teaching her basic English. The experience was my first on Workaway. It allowed me to immerse myself into the Spanish culture, as well as the language, and improve my childcare skills.

In order to pass on my enthusiasm for literature, I decided to become a reading mentor for a Year 7 student. My mentees – I had one during my time in Year 12, and one in Year 13 – were students who struggled with reading, and whose reading levels were too low for their age. Our aim was to help them grow in confidence when reading, giving them the encouragement to keep reading actively, and move onto more difficult texts with ease.

At the Kumon Centre, two subjects are taught; English and Mathematics. I was mainly marking the Maths students’ work, giving them feedback and assistance when needed. Working with different students, age 6 to age 16, gave me an insight into the style of teaching and communication needed for the different age ranges.
