My graduation internship for the bachelor study Marine Engineering concerned a research into the differences between a conventional and a diesel-electric pod-propelled coaster.During the study, the following research question was leading:‘Is it possible to achieve a minimum of 25% fuel savings by using variable speed dieselelectric propulsion and a 750 kW MGT Thruster? And how does this propulsion configuration affect the ship design and manoeuvring abilities?’The fuel savings achieved were between 10 and 25%.

As a junior project engineer, my job is to ensure that the building process of a ship is well prepared, Information gathering, providing this information and making various CAD drawings belongs to the everyday work. These so called foundation drawings mostly concern ladders, stairs, bollards, foundations for equipment, piping etc. When a drawing is finished it will be completed with a parts list to be able to ask supplier to tender. Eventually when a supplier offers a good price it will become an order.

During my internship at Oranjewoud, I assisted my colleagues in making structural drawings and calculations of the building construction of various projects. I wanted this internship to become more familiar with the structural part of my study.
