In this research position I began by performing chalcogenide glass synthesis. The glass was used to develop phase change memory, since it could rapidly switch from an amorphous to crystalline microsctructure. This material was then created into a device calibrated for use as a thin film radiation sensor. While a variety of techniques were used to do this amongst my colleagues, I used thermal evaporation to deposit thin layers of various metals and glasses onto a silicon wafer. I characterized these devices using Raman Spectroscopy and SEM imaging. From this research position I have gained many skills in electronic device manufacturing and characterization. My experience in this lab has been very enjoyable and interesting. Still so much more to learn!

In this research position I was responsible for carbon nano-tube and graphene synthesis. I researched and designed processes to develop higher quality carbon nano-tubes and graphene growths. The growths were done on a nickle substrate using chemical vapor deposition. I performed characterization of these materials using Raman Spectroscopy, SEM imaging, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Furthermore, I performed a variety of post processing techniques to separate the delicate growths from their original substrate. From this research I learned about what factors influence the growth of carbon nano-tubes and graphene. As well as, valuable experience in performing characterization and handling of these materials.
