I am Vice President for Academic Initiatives at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. As both an academic leader and an active scholar of English literature, history, and philosophy for more than 20 years, I have an unwavering commitment to the humanities and arts and believe they must retain their rightful place at the core of the modern university, preserving the most enduring and influential traditions of thought regarding human values, human meaning-making, and human experience while also turning to ask fundamental questions about those traditions, challenging their root assumptions, and opening inquiry to new forms, new problems, and new methods. Many fields can teach us facts about the world, in its manifold aspects. But only the humanities and arts can teach us to find purpose in the plurality of the world and how to use this purpose to guide our actions so that we leave the world better than we found it.
