As a student worker I assisted operations at two facilities, the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems and the Edwards Building Steel Mill. I aided in facility management, operation, and 5S organization of the facilities. As part of these tasks I would identify and dismantle defunct lab equipment for replacement, storage, or relocation, create documentation for machinery planned maintenance schedules, and implemented new organization of workspaces to improve workplace productivity. At the Edwards Steel Mill I assist in the implementation of 5S principles, the preparation of the workspace for steel production, and facility improvements.

I worked in a team to create a UV light sensor casing for REL Inc. as part of my Mechanical Systems senior design course. I created the original casing design which was used as the basis for the project. I created the first 3D models of this design, which were then altered to include 3D models of the sensor's internal components. Once we had a complete model, I used Simulia Abaqus to perform finite element analysis on the model and ensure it would sustain the 500 G impact force specified by the REL Inc. After FEA, my team 3D printed two prototypes, and integrated components of a market UV light sensor into the body as a proof of concept. We presented two comprehensive presentations on our work to Mississippi State faculty and REL Inc. staff detailing the design considerations and FEA results, alongside our regular meetings with the customer to ensure we were developing a product they were satisfied with.

During my internship at Southwest Power Pool I completed two projects related to data and model integrity. The first project required the validation of registered and modeled power capacities for over 1000 generating units. This process was initially done by hand, taking a few days’ work, so my mentor and I created a SQL validation query that would automate this process for future operations support engineers to run before model uploads. Ensuring adherence to registered power capacities improved model integrity and helped to ensure proper market settlements. The second project was to pinpoint inaccuracies in the models of power Utility’s onelines for over 400 substations. These inaccuracies between the model and current Utility onelines had impacts on multiple downstream applications. This position helped me to improve my data analysis and problem-solving skills, as large sets of data had to be navigated and sorted efficiently, and develop an analytical mind.
