Executive Technologist within Military Air and Information, Research & Technology of BAE Systems championing research for the company. Providing expert advice, guidance and technology leadership in electro-optics and photonics in order to solve highly complex problems, supporting engineering strategies and exerting technology influence within and outside of Military Air and Information.Original research is undertaken as well as managing links with national and international industry, academic establishments, research organisations and funding bodies in order to exert influence on behalf of the BAE Systems.

Strategy development for the photonics area of the Advanced Technology Centre of BAE Systems. Technical team leadership for: fibre communication systems, optical and hybrid wireless communications systems, photonic sensing systems, long range imaging, underwater optical communications, high power laser systems, visible light communications (LiFi) and novel photonic technologies. Within the fibre optics area, this involves the application of silica and plastic optical fibre technology for use in harsh environments. Technology covered includes passive (fibre, connector, coupler, routing, multiplexing, waveguide, backplane technologies …) and active (transceivers, lasers, detectors, amplifiers, switching technologies …) components.Wireless optical network systems for use within and between mobile platforms and underwater (and through surface) communication, imaging and sensing systems are being developed for various applications.Practical demonstrations of fibre and free-space optical sub-systems in order to address all areas of exploitation are a major element of this work.The role includes liaison with the various business units of BAE Systems over their future requirements and how novel technologies can be applied to their product range. This includes Military Aircraft, Information systems, Submarines, Naval Ships, Maritime Services, Combat Vehicles, Electronic Systems and Applied Intelligence. Working with suppliers and academia to direct technology developments in order to help match the future company requirements. As well as technical performance; environmental performance, affordability and covertness are important development requirements. Other responsibilities include Business winning, Bid and Project Management, External dissemination (papers and presentations), Technical design reviews and Supervision of students and graduates.

Group Leader for the Photonics Group of the Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) of BAE Systems. Particular technologies covered by the group include: fibre optic digital communications, optical sensor technologies, high power lasers, novel imaging systems, optical wireless communications and underwater communication, imaging and sensing systems.Role included: line management responsibilities and career development of group; business winning; resource management and reporting; strategy development and technical delivery.
