Dr. York is Chief of the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI/D) Service at the VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) in La Jolla, CA. The center oversees care for approximately 900 Veterans and active-duty personnel with SCI/D in San Diego, Southern California, and Arizona. He is appointed Health Sciences Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).Dr. York grew up in Anaheim, CA, but completed his education and training on the East Coast. He was a Johns Hopkins University undergraduate, attended New York University School of Medicine, returned to Johns Hopkins for Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) Residency, and completed a SCI Medicine Fellowship at Kernan Hospital, now named University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute (UM Rehab).Dr. York stayed at UM Rehab as Medical Director of the SCI Unit and was appointed Assistant Professor in the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Department of Neurology. Clinically, Dr. York directly cared for individuals with SCI/D across all stages of their lifespan. He has considerable experience with physician leadership and hospital management, serving in all officer roles for the UM Rehab Medical Staff and the Maryland State Society of PM&R.Dr. York is a physician-scientist who seeks to advance rehabilitation science and translate new knowledge into tangible improvements in rehabilitative care and community integration. His research focuses on participation, activity, and adapted exercise modalities for individuals with SCI/D. His case reports and descriptive studies have identified areas for scientific inquiry in SCI/D research and he participates in several industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated multi-center research projects.Dr. York has contributed substantially to medical education, training scores of residents from the Johns Hopkins and Sinai Hospital of Baltimore PM&R Residency Training Programs. He has been honored twice with Outstanding Teaching Awards by the latter. He taught as faculty for the UMSOM Neurology Residency, Anesthesia Fellowship, and Medical Student PM&R Interest Group. He serves as site director for the Sunrise GME Consortium PM&R Residency Training program in Las Vegas, the first PM&R program to send their residents to the VA San Diego SCI/D center for their core SCIM rotation.Looking ahead, Dr. York is dedicated to strengthening the clinical excellence and expanding the research enterprise and academic program inside a brand-new SCI/D building set to open in 2025.
