  • Allsides
    Managing Editor
    Allsides Feb 2020 - Apr 2023
    San Francisco, California, Us
I run the news operation on allsides.com.In my 3+ years at AllSides, our traffic has grown more than 1200% across our website, mobile app and social media platforms. More than 1 million people now use our products and services each month, up from roughly 100,000 in early 2019.Our news team is small, fully remote and spread across the U.S. time zones. I create and execute our news agenda; lead meetings; manage the news team's payroll and HR; and lead our recruiting and hiring.I also spearhead the development and execution of our news strategies and goals. Since starting at AllSides, I've built a set of News Curation Principles to guide our operation, and created a one-of-a-kind content labeling system within our curation that we apply to hundreds of news outlets. I also formed our News Advisory Board, made up of six industry veterans and experts who meet several times per year and are available for consulting on a regular basis. In addition, I rehauled our news operation to emphasize quality, traffic and monetization while serving a daily audience.I am responsible for ensuring that all our news content meets our editorial and philosophical standards.I write editorials and analysis pieces for our AllSides Perspectives blog, some of which are featured as guest columns or reports by other newspapers and news websites. I also lead the production of our weekly newsletter.I analyze traffic to our site and social media, and craft Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reports using Google Analytics that our team uses to make improvements to Search Engine Optimization and overall discoverability. I monitor audience engagement daily on our site and social media platforms, and develop strategy based on those evaluations to help us reach more people more effectively and promote more user engagement with our content.I also created a system for all our managers to conduct performance reviews of our employees, and I assist in various other administrative operations.
  • Allsides
    Daily News Editor
    Allsides Jun 2019 - Feb 2020
    San Francisco, California, Us
I was hired after graduating college to create a new and improved news service on allsides.com. Right away, I took a disorganized operation and a fully-remote, inexperienced team and created a legitimate daily news service. In my eight months as daily news editor, I oversaw a vast improvement of the quality and profitability of our news service. I created content quotas, implemented a 24/7 publishing schedule for the site and social media, and codified every news team task and procedure into step-by-step "How To" reference documents for team members. I created the AllSides News Curation Principles, an ethical framework for our news operation modeled after the Society of Professional Journalists' Code of Ethics. I set up weekly team meetings and put news team members in constant contact, building a sound working camaraderie with team members scattered throughout the U.S.In my first six months on the job, our monthly returning website users grew from 50,000 to 100,000. Our news content went from attracting 8,000 daily users to more than 30,000. Our Twitter following grew 300%, our Facebook following grew 50%, and our reach on each platform doubled.

  • The Poynter Institute
    Journalism Fellow
The Poynter Institute Jun 2019 - May 2020
    Us
I was one of 52 early-career journalists to be selected for the groundbreaking Media and Journalism Fellowship launched by the Poynter Institute in conjunction with the Charles Koch Institute. This career-accelerating program focused on the pillars of First Amendment law and foundations of a free press; media ethics, balance and fairness; reporting/storytelling techniques and digital literacy/misinformation. I had the opportunity to learn from some of the country's most prominent journalists and media professionals — Google News VP Richard Gingras, CBS News' Major Garrett, and many other writers/editors/specialists from a host of backgrounds and influential news organizations — while participating in weekly educational workshops, attending in-person networking summits, and being enlisted with near-limitless tools and educational resources over the course of the year-long program. I made dozens of lasting, empowering connections and gained cutting-edge knowledge that significantly advanced my skills and understanding of the industry.I was part of a team that won First Place in the fellowship group project contest for a story about journalism in Mexico, which is linked above.

My position as a production assistant began as a fellowship. I was able to gain real-world experience in television / field production and reporting for the first time, and an exceptional amount of reps in learning to identify good stories and proper balance in sourcing interviews for them. Each day, I was assigned to pitch stories and reach out to and schedule people of interest to record interviews for the station's nightly current events program, who were at times VIP local politicians, leaders, CEOs, etc. After my six-month fellowship ended, I was re-hired as a production assistant. My work continued and expanded, as I generated ideas for stories that would resonate with the station's audience, and reached out to experts to book interviews. I also had the opportunity to direct, write, edit and narrate my own packages for the show.
