About Henry Chatfield

I really care about connecting musicians with their fans. This has manifested in many ways over the past 15+ years in the music industry, including:- 10,000's of tickets sold through concerts I have booked & promoted- 10,000's of tickets sold by musician clients I've represented- Millions of impressions through artist clients’ content & marketing- Many millions of streams (songs) from artist clients- 1,000+ concerts, festivals, and conferences I have attended as a fan first- 1,000's of miles driven with artist clients on tour- Millions of dollars in cumulative gross merchandise sales from artist clients- Millions of dollars in cumulative gross touring revenue from artist clients- 1 Webby Award for an artist song release activation I’ve worked on- 10,000’s of intentionally launched & sold music NFTs for $100,000’s, including multiple praise and mentions in Billboard- 450+ applications received (for 16 positions) for an educational workshop I designed and ran for musicians to plan, fund, market and ship a project release- Many contributions to artist/fan-focused projects and products successfully brought from 0>1, including album releases, an artist management crm tool, a music video game, infrastructure for successful communities, artist funding and economic empowerment platform and tools, and much more.Over this time, I've been experimenting with how technology can improve the music business by giving artists more leverage, independence, and economic empowerment. Most of that time and experience has been focused on working very closely and directly with musicians and their teams as an artist manager, as well as working for technology start-ups focused on serving artists.Recently, I've been experimenting with the intersection of blockchain and the music industry, and the value and utility that it can potentially unlock for artists. As a side gig, I've coached hundreds of entrepreneurs and leaders through Seth Godin's altMBA. Coaching has been one of the most impactful experiences in my life and has enabled me to develop many skills within marketing, iterating and shipping, decision-making, and communication -- especially focused on giving and receiving feedback. My ideal position is at the intersection of: - Working directly with musicians & helping them run their business, while also developing scalable products that can help many artists- experimenting with & leveraging technology to build artist tools- economic empowerment for musicians- education & resource sharing for musicians

Listed skills include Event Management, Entertainment, Social Media Marketing, Music Industry, and 13 others.

Founder / Artist Manager

Current

D&C is a full-service artist management company I founded in late 2017. I worked with professional, full-time, independent musicians and helped them run their business and coordinate strategy amongst all of their team members including: agent (touring), business manager, merchandise manufacturing and distribution, physical and digital music distribution, promotion and publicist, publishing and rights administration, tour manager, production, venues and promoters, attorney, and many other stakeholders involved in the artist's career to varying degrees. If an artist worked with anyone, I very likely was involved in some capacity.Artist management requires you to wear many hats, learn and adjust quickly and on the fly, and communicate and coordinate across many different team members -- from longterm strategy (ie coordinating music release with tour schedule and maintaining positive cashflow for the business), to extremely granular day-to-day problem solving (ie getting a call at 2am to help find a tow truck for a broken down van 2000 miles away). Here is a summary of an artist's team that I wrote about several years ago: https://bit.ly/artistMGMTteamIt gives a broad overview, and more specific detail, about each team member whom I worked with to give a better idea of the type of work required of a successful artist manager. My philosophy for artist management is to lead with empathy and to first and foremost be my clients' biggest advocate, which involves building a lot of trust. I also try to emphasize the importance of artists seeing themselves as a small (or large!) business with a balance sheet, while also making it a priority to find the fine balance between maintaining positive cash flow but not sacrificing the integrity of their art.On a personal note, being an entrepreneur has been something I have done in varying capacities my whole life, and founding and running my own business has been something I very much enjoy.

Coach

Current

Founded and designed by best-selling business author, marketer, and entrepreneur Seth Godin, the altMBA is a 31-day online sprint and immersive workshop which has cumulatively impacted over 7000 participants across 109 countries. Participants include Fortune 500 C Suite employees, to marketers, to early-stage start-up entrepreneurs. As a coach, I have directly worked with thousands of students and supported them through the process. My time coaching has been crucial to my development as a leader, teammate, communicator, and builder. Coaching requires strong communication skills between other coaches and students with a lot of different skill levels, personality types, and learning styles. One of my primary responsibilities was focused on giving feedback through intentional questions. Some of the topics we focus on during the workshop, and that I have experimented with, refined, and have extensive experience with over the years include: empathy based analysis and leadership, giving and receiving feedback, turning feedback into useful insights, customer stories, goal setting, business models, idea and product sprints, group work and its challenges and benefits, decision-making, defining what success looks like, sunk costs, change catalysts, framing, positioning, ask 'what's it for?' and 'who's it for?', starting with why, storytelling, gaining enrollment w/ stakeholders (clients, customers, team), worldviews, customer-focused design, semiotics, pattern matching, human-centered marketing, personas, org maps and identifying key decision-makers, critical thinking, customer journeys, how to coach, and more importantly how to be coachable. The skills and experience I have developed through coaching altMBA has deeply impacted what work I do, how I do it, and how I look at the world.

Partner / Artist Manager

San Francisco Bay Area

Tahoe Artists is a full-service artist management company. Previous clients included: Monophonics, The Brothers Comatose, Mad Caddies, Steve Poltz, and The Happys.

Dec 2014 - Dec 2017

A&R Scout

At PledgeMusic, I searched for and worked with up and coming musicians during a pivotal moment in the music industry when direct-to-fan communities were emerging as a new viable alternative funding model for record release campaigns. At the time I worked at PledgeMusic, it was one of the leading music technology platforms available to musicians and it perfectly blended three areas of focus that have become throughlines for my professional career: music business, economic empowerment for creators, and leveraging and experimenting with technology. Please note: I was very discouraged to learn four years after I left the company that it had a very tragic ending which hurt a lot of independent musicians. During the time I worked there, PledgeMusic was pioneering a lot of positive change for the music industry and the way it ended is an unfortunate reminder that organizations must be nurtured and maintained in order for continued growth and success.

Booked, produced and/or promoted concerts at the UC Davis campus including: Drake, Steve Aoki, Phoenix, Porter Robinson, Alabama Shakes, Snoop Dogg, The Shins, RJD2, Allen Stone, Bon Iver, Best Coast, Wolfgang Gartner, Dropkock Murphys, Explosions on the Sky, Vampire Weekend, Tipper, Passion Pit, and many others. Coordinated dozens of promotional ticket give aways with promoters such as Another Planet Ent and Live Nation.

Customer Service Agent

Santa Barbara, California, United States

I worked at the airport with customers on every aspect of their airline travel experience, from front counter ticketing, boarding, loading aircraft baggage, landing aircraft, coordinating with pilots, and emptying aircraft sewage. I started working here after high school when I first moved to California. I left when I went to college.I really value my time here because it made a significant impact on the way I view customer service for all industries. I was the direct, frontline contact with hundreds of customers a day at a time when airlines started *charging* for checked baggage for the first time. I will never forget the level of animosity I received, as a teenager making $10/hr, from customers outraged when they were surprised to learn that their checked baggage was no longer free. This experience taught me a lot about customer service, how to deescalate customer complaints, but most importantly: *as a customer* how to lead with empathy and how to treat customer service agents (who almost definitely have no key decision-making power over decisions made by the company they work for). This experience and learning is something I have been able to lean on many times over my professional career and personal life. The relationship between customer and company is something that fascinates me and I often find myself drawn towards thinking about it for every organization I am part of.
