I am a university professor turned intellectual property attorney. I came to the practice of law after an 18-year first career as a professor and consultant in electrical, computer, and software engineering. During that first career I designed, developed and taught over 50 different courses ranging across all areas of electrical, computer, and software engineering; supervised design teams; designed and developed hardware and software systems; and developed patented inventions. This background provides me with a working technical knowledge that is both extremely broad and deep and allows me to learn new technologies fast and explain them to others in a clear and easy way to understand. My technical working knowledge enables me to connect seemingly disparate areas and see the big picture. This ability to see how old technologies can be applied in new areas is one of the important skills that makes me valuable to my clients. For example, I can readily see and appreciate how core software engineering principles and computer science practices may be practically applied to enhance technology related to robotics, networks, storage systems, positioning systems, and fintech. My background also gives me the unique ability to connect and talk to engineers and technical founders. I work with clients of all sizes to help them develop their patent strategy, including prosecution, patent office trial, and litigation work, and patent portfolio management.
