Herb has directed the clinical chemistry operations at the MD Anderson Cancer center, one of the largest cancer treatment centers in the world, for 42 years (1969-2010). Hs academic career as Professor of Laboratory Medicine consisted of research and education, with teaching appointments at the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and School of Medical Technology. He also directed the training programs for many post graduate PhD students and Medical Pathology Fellowships in Clinical Chemistry.His research activities focused mainly on development and validation of diagnostic tests for cancer screening, early detection, assessing response to therapy, and patient monitoring for early detection of metastatic recurrence. His work has resulted in over 200 publications in peer reviewed publications and books. He has served on the Editorial Board for a number of cancer journals; on committees for professional societies (AACC, ASCO, CLAS), the US Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute; and on the Scientific Advisory Boards of many companies. He has been the recipient of prominent national awards for his contributions to cancer research and patient care.After his retirement in 2010 from MD Anderson, Herb initiated a successful career in consulting allowing him to serve in various roles for companies, such as vice-president for scientific affairs, as an independent reviewer of research activities, as a laboratory director of a CLIA approved testing laboratory, as founder of a start-up company for a new anti-cancer immune based therapy, and as clinical trials director for a company focused on discovery and development of natural products for use in cancer therapy.Herb and wife Linda enjoy travel, and life on their cattle ranch in Texas.
