Retired from my "day job" as a registered patent agent, I continue to serve as a Director and Vice President of the Utah Stream Access Coalition, having begun this important work in 2010, not long after the perversely named "Public Waters Access Act" was passed by the Utah Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Gary Herbert. This Act effectively gave away the public's right to lawfully enjoy water-based recreation on 2,700 miles of Utah's publicly-owned rivers and streams, or about 43% of Utah's fishable waterways. The work continues in 2024 with the General Session of the 65th Utah Legislature.

    Arup Laboratories Aug 2015 - Dec 2023

Now retired, I performed complex intellectual property research and analysis, drafted related documents, and presented my findings to management and counsel. I educated and provided consultation on patent-related issues and patent law to the ARUP community. I assisted management in developing appropriate strategies and solutions for securing and protecting intellectual property. As needed, I worked with outside counsel, managers from the University of Utah Office of Technology & Venture Commercialization, and counsel from the University of Utah Office of General Counsel. I was specifically tasked with staying current on changes to patent law, scientific and medical diagnostic techniques, corporate and university policies, and the legal and business implications of these changes.

I also accepted the challenge to serve as the TIP Docketing Supervisor for the entire firm from July 2014 to July 2015, and oversaw the complex and successful transition of firm-wide TIP docketing to a new web-based docketing software platform (FoundationIP), which I had used in my previous position. I was assisted in this important transition by a staff of six talented and dedicated docketing professionals, who were split between the Portland and Salt Lake Offices.
