About Herb Weiss

On January 4, 1999, Weiss was charged by Pawtucket Mayor James E. Doyle with oversight of the City’s newly established Arts and Entertainment District. Over the years, he has been a driver of Pawtucket’s arts-oriented development strategy. In particular, his efforts to bring artists to the city’s historic mill buildings have attracted national attention and documented by filmmaker Jason Caminiti in Pawtucket Rising, a 2008 documentary.Weiss was part of the group that created the Pawtucket Arts Festival (PAF), founded in 1999, and received its inaugural Medal of Excellence Award in 2015. He was the first recipient of the Pawtucket Foundation’s Person of the Year award. In 2005, he received the Advocacy in the Arts Action Award from All Children’s Theatre, and in 2013 he was recognized with an Excellence in Arts and Business award from the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council. Weiss also serves as the liaison between the city and filmmakers seeking Pawtucket locations to film movies, television shows and commercials. For his advocacy and support of the film industry, the RI Film Collaborative gave Weiss its first Excellence Award in 2010. In 2016, the RI International Film Festival recognized his efforts to promote the RI film industry by awarding him its Producer’s Circle Award. Weiss was also invited by other13 municipalities (in Maine, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New York and Massachusetts to discuss Pawtucket’s arts policy and its economic impact on the city. In August 2023, Weiss became the City’s Deputy Director of the Leon Mathieu Senior Center. He oversees the Center’s transportation services, is involved in writing grants and delegated special projects.In August 2023, Weiss became the City's Deputy Director of the Leon Mathieu Senior Center, overseeing the Center's Transportation program, writing grants, and marketing the Center through marketing collateral and website. Since 1980, over 870 articles that Weiss has authored or co-authored have appeared in national, Rhode Island and trade publications. While he is best known for his work as a writer and as an arts and cultural ambassador for the city of Pawtucket He recently was appointed Deputy Director of the city’s Leon Mathieu Senior Center.For over 42 years, Herb has enjoyed a distinguished career in journalism, earning a national reputation as an aging expert. He also writes a weekly editorial commentary for two Rhode Island dailies and RI News Today, a Rhode Island digital news site. His cover story also appears in the monthly senior publication, Senior Digest.Since 1980, over 870 articles that he has authored or co-authored have appeared in national, Rhode Island and trade publications. His articles are posted on herbweiss.blog.From 1985 to 1993. Herb oversaw editorial content for seven nationally published newsletters and newspapers. During this time, he also covered Capitol Hill writing the Capitol Report, for The Journal of Long Term Care Administration (later renamed Balance), and Contemporary Long Term Care. As a journalist, he was accredited by the House Press Gallery to cover Congress. He also served on editorial advisory boards of national nursing home publications. Herb is a recipient of the AARP Rhode Island’s Vision Award. He is a two-time recipient of the Washington, DC based American College of Health Care Administrator’s National Award for his coverage of aging issues. He was also awarded the Distinguished Alumni’s Award by the Center for Studies in Aging, North Texas State University, in 1997. During this year he was also selected by the prestigious McKnight’s LTC News to be one of its “100 Most Influential People” in long-term care. Over the years, Herb was appointed by five Rhode Island governors to serve on the Rhode Island Advisory Commission on Aging and was also appointed by Rhode Island Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio to serve on the Advisory Council on Alzheimer’s Disease Research and Treatment.
