Hercílio Zimila Email and Phone Number
I am an Environmetal Engineer and Chemist with backgrounds in Engineering Management and Chemical Engineering.I have over 12-year experience contributing to addressing pressing issues, including water, energy, food, health and education. My current research is on modeling, life cycle assessment and technoeconomic studies of water and wastewater treatment technologies for the removal of deleterious contaminants like pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and industrial chemicals. However, I have done research on analytical method development, heterogeneous catalysis, renewable energy, and natural products. To enhance access to quality education for underrepresented communities, I co-founded Scholars2Scholars. Under my Presidency, Scholars2Scholars became the biggest platform for educational opportunity sharing in Mozambique and Angola with over 10,000 followers on social media. Through #mentorship, #networking, and #outreach initiatives, I have helped over 1000 youth to find opportunities to study and work at leading schools across the world. Let's connect and drive the change together!

Graduate Research AssistantUniversity Of Arizona College Of Engineering Aug 2021 - PresentTucson, Arizona, United StatesSkills: Project Management · Water and Wastewater Treatment Systems Design · Water Testing · Environmental Assessment and Remediation for Contaminated Sites · Technical Sales and Marketing · Grant Writing · Hazardous Waste Management · Life Cycle AssessmentAs a Ph.D. student in Environmental Engineering, minoring in Industrial Engineering, I bring a versatile skill set to tackle complex and pressing challenges in the field of Water and Wastewater. My research involves primarily the design of advanced oxidation processes and constructed wetlands for low-cost and sustainable water and wastewater treatment. I am particularly interested in the role of water components, such as organic matter and inorganic species, and sunlight in the degradation of emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and industrial chemicals. These approaches have the potential to dramatically reduce the cost of water treatment and protect human health and biodiversity from hazardous chemicals that resist removal even using advanced membrane technologies such as reverse osmosis and nanofiltration. -
