I am a 20-year veteran teacher of secondary school mathematics having taught at independent schools in the United States, an International School in Rome, and at American study abroad programs in both Italy and China. I am familiar with both the AP and IB curriculum and I can teach the most talented students of mathematics. I have a particular talent and interest in working with and motivating students who need to grow confidence in their quantitative abilities and thinking. I particularly appreciate and have success introducing 9th graders and young women into secondary school mathematics. Using technology, such as Geometer’s Sketchpad, I can both help illustrate concepts as well as create assignments that allow students to apply their knowledge. I also produce my own video lectures and therefore run a flipped classroom when appropriate to ensure more constructive discussion and complex problem solving within the classroom. I host my own website (www.chenmath.com) on which I post all lecture notes, homework answers and online lectures.I work collaboratively in academic situations, taking on projects and accepting additional responsibilities, willingly contributing in both action and expressing my opinions. However, having worked without other math teachers for a number of years, I look forward to learning from and sharing my knowledge with other math teachers to result in better teaching and curriculum for our students.Having spent my entire career teaching in independent schools with rigorous and high academic standards, I am familiar with the pressures and demands put on our best high school students but more importantly, have learned what quantitative skills and knowledge they need to succeed in post-secondary education in whatever field a student chooses to pursue.
