It had been one year in 2018 since I launched the first book from my publishing imprint SIM at the New Delhi World Book Fair. I had the conviction to make progress and make this a success, eventually. But I didn't know what was coming on that evening- to destroy everything I didn't need for good. Ever since I returned from England to my homeland India after spending 7 years- I had been going through adjustment issues to the point of survival. We just couldn't sync up back here. I couldn't find a job that suited me, anywhere near my skillset or experience. It was as if a completely different world to what I remembered. We struggled. To top it off- None of our family or friends could understand what we were experiencing. Fast forward to 2017- I launched a publishing imprint with one title. In the preceding 8 years we had walked through hell just to stay alive. Needless to say, the hell did change me for the worse. Collateral damage. I became an alcoholic. A recluse, a moaner.That evening in 2018, I woke up from a mid-day hangover at around 6 p.m. and found the house empty. My wife's phone was switched off. The kids and wife were not there. I looked around like a madman and suddenly realized the distinct possibility of being left alone forever. It felt like the inevitable had happened. I sobbed, shouted, prayed, and asked for forgiveness, one chance. I broke the bottle.Thankfully- I did get a chance- I didn't want to waste it- what I do with SIM and OBS- is pure passion and gratitude.
