Sue Hyman Associates is a small arts publicity office based in Covent Garden, handling the publicity for projects from touring theatre productions to one-off fundraising events. Basic responsibilities include updating the company website, Facebook and Twitter accounts; doing the company accounts and assisting Sue Hyman with organisational and administrative tasks. I also attend press photocalls and press nights, assist with press release mailings and liase with journalists and photographers.
General Manager
I began interning at the Finborough Theatre in August and ten days later became General Manager. Being thrown in at the deep end meant I had a lot of responsibility and had to learn very quickly, a challenge which though stressful I hugely enjoyed. Each day was different with tasks from liasing with visiting producers, directors, technical staff and audiences, to preparing press releases, to doing the weekly finances and editing press releases, quotes documents and other materials into the house style for use on the website, in programmes and for electronic mailouts. I vastly improved my administrative and organisational skills, and my problem solving and time management were tested to the limit. My role also meant that I was responsible for the interns working beneath me which meant assessing applications, interviewing and hiring interns, training new interns and coordinating the rota and ensuring the smooth running of the theatre on a daily basis. I worked closely with another General Manager for most of this period. I was privileged to meet some amazing, creative and driven people.
Bar Staff
Basic responsibilities involved taking food and drink orders, serving drinks and maintaining the pub. Additionally, my responsibilities included opening up the pub for day shifts and closing down including cashing up on evening shifts. The pub had a great atmosphere and lovely staff and I really enjoyed working there.
Bartender
Kitchenette is London’s first ‘kitchen incubator’. I worked part-time at their summer pop-up. This included preparing the bar for service, producing drinks and cocktails, working with staff from visiting companies and being confident in the Kitchenette ethos so able to explain company aims and events to customers and clients.
Undergraduate Student Researcher
The final year of my degree included a laboratory-based dissertation project; titled ‘A forward genetic screen for secondary motor neuron mutations in zebrafish’. The project required application of the theory studied throughout previous years and allowed me to experience a true lab environment. I developed skills from fish husbandry, to mounting techniques, to microscopy, to using software such as ImageJ and ZEN 2011 to analyse results. Weekly lab meetings developed a sense of community within the lab.
Stage Manager
During university I became involved in several university theatre companies, beginning as an Assistant Stage Manager and working up to becoming Stage Manager of the largest Edinburgh University theatre company - Footlights. Responsibilities ranged from sourcing props and constructing set pieces to organising backstage areas, liasing with venue managers and managing cues. The job required teamwork and delegation and organisation of tasks to ensure team members are able to work efficiently and effectively to produce a smooth-running show. It was high pressure as time is often limited. I thus learnt to keep calm in stressful situations and perform tasks in a logical and efficient manner.
Bar Staff
My role on the bar involved interacting with customers, making and serving drinks, organising deliveries, table service for food orders and bar and cellar maintenance. Additionally, I handled guesthouse bookings/enquiries both in person and by phone.
Bar Staff
NSA Eventbars is one of the leading outdoor mobile bar companies in the UK. It was essential to be polite, friendly and helpful at all times, in addition to looking professional. Working efficiently with other staff and managers to maintain smooth service was key. Responsibilities also included opening and closing down the bars, restocking and maintaining cleanliness.
