About Heather Fleming

Through each phase of my professional development (social worker, supervisor, educator, administrator, small business owner, and diversity, equity, and inclusion trainer and developer), the underlying principle has remained the same: helping all individuals get their place at the table, free from the barriers of discrimination and inequity. I have dedicated myself to developing others' understanding of the significant positive outcomes that an equitable society would render--socio-emotionally and financially. My efforts have helped individuals, companies, schools, and organizations develop specific diversity goals and inclusive practices that increased employee/student/individual morale, helped recruit and retain highly-qualified people of color to positions within their organization, and cultivate a culture of acceptance, tolerance, and inclusion. My style of training, development, and management is characterized by a strong work ethic, an expectation of inclusive collaboration, authentic interaction, data-informed goal-setting, a combination of best practices and bold innovation, and a team approach to problem-solving. Skills and abilities:*Author of My Black Friend Says...: Lessons in Equity, Inclusion, and Cultural CompetencyProgram Development--designed and implemented DEI training programs for teachers, administrators, businesses, and churches.#Mentoring and Development--mentored and trained individuals on subjects such as critical literacy, holding courageous conversations about race and other difficult topics, and creating an inclusive culture. Promoted systems and culture through training and mentoring.#Leadership and Team Building--lead numerous teams of diverse professionals.#Curriculum Development and Improvement--developed district-implemented curriculum; trained and supported district curriculum writers. Aided in assessment of curriculum for inclusivity and effectiveness for diverse learning styles.#Data Collection and Evaluation--collected data from assessment and surveys and used the information for program evaluation.#Strategic Planning--proven ability to assess the "big picture" and develop a detailed plan to achieve the greater mission, with an intentional focus on DEI for the benefit of all.#Event and Presentation Planning--skilled at planning for large, diverse groups; responsible use of budget and resources.

"My Black Friends Says… is the book we need right now. Written as a series of short essays with pauses for reflection and journaling, MBFS… explores the issue of race in a very practical, inviting, and empowering way. This book will give readers the ability to tackle race issues from a position of knowledge and confidence. It teaches readers about the ways in which we develop biases, how to tackle those biases and associated emotions, and how to move forward without shame or fear. Though each essay addresses an individual issue related to inclusion and diversity in our society, the combined knowledge will allow people to see the nuances of racism, discrimination, and advocacy in America. With an appendix of suggested reading materials, study topics, and terms to know, this book provides you with all you need to begin your journey towards being a catalyst for change."
