In my 25+ year career as a software engineer, I have always strived to make teams better and more successful while building successful and loved products for customers. I consider mentoring or the participation in organization wide leadership forums an important part of my ability to influence an organization. I am very grateful that I had multiple times the opportunity to participate in Diversity and Inclusion efforts beyond engineering and technology. I have been contributing to open source projects for many years, and spoke at various open source conferences whenever my responsibilities allowed me to do so. As a curious engineer, I always strive to learn new things and new technologies. As a technology leader and architect, I encourage engineering teams to find new and innovative ways to solve the problems of the ever changing technology landscape.I am a strong believer in the close collaboration between Product and Engineering to enable teams to work together to solve hard problems and create extraordinary products. Focus areas: Technology thought leadership, Backend systems, Big data architectures, Product and technology transformations.

Principal EngineerGroupon Jan 2015 - Jul 2015Chicago, Il, Us -
Principal Platform ArchitectGroupon Jan 2014 - Jan 2015Chicago, Il, UsMy role at Groupon allowed me to be involved in shaping the future direction of Groupon engineering. As member of the core architecture group, I closely collaborate with my peers to set technical direction and guidelines for an engineering workforce that spans five continents and works on all aspects of Groupons distributed and diverse platform. Senior engineers and architects at Groupon are required to be "hands on" with one or more groups at the organization to ensure that our work directly benefits engineering as a whole and is not detached from the problems that engineers face in their day to day work.* As tech lead on the mobile backend team I designed and helped building the first generation of a general purpose 'push notification' platform which allows sending real time messages to millions of mobile app users. This platform resulted in a significant increase of user engagement with the Groupon mobile app and increase in revenue for the organization.* Designed and built the first "inhouse-cloud" system to unify service deployment and management. Using Apache Mesos to virtualize hardware resources promised reduction of the hardware footprint for the platform for as much as 75% thus reducing the capital expenses for new hardware. Major contributions to Apache Mesos and the Singularity Mesos framework. -
Software EngineerFacebook Oct 2012 - Dec 2013Joined Facebook as a member of the data infrastructure (DI) team which manages and develops software for Facebook's Exabyte scale data warehouse. As a senior engineer with expertise in Java technologies, I was also involved with a number of initiatives across the organization and team such as Messaging and Android to work on company wide common problems around these technologies.Major accomplishments* Worked on the Presto, Facebook's next generation exabyte scale, distributed SQL query engine and built the first functional version of the native store. The native store engine increases performance of queries by up to 1,000%.* Started a replacement project for the ageing Hive metadata store thus allowing the metadata management for the data warehouse to keep pace with the ever increasing size and demands from a company at Facebook scale.* Started an initiative to build Java software inside the Facebook organization in an uniform way. This led to internal and external (open source) build platforms using Apache Maven. The external build platform is open sourced at Facebook's github account.* Managed the first major open-source release of Facebook's common Java (jcommons) library.* Built source and byte code generation tools for Facebook's third generation open source Java Thrift library, Swift. Listed as a major contributor on Facebook's github project.* Contributed presentations to the internal 'Effective Java' presentation series. -
Principal ArchitectNess Computing Sep 2010 - Oct 2012Los Altos, Ca, UsAs the principal for the Ness engineering team, I was responsible for setting the overall architecture of the Ness platform and scaling of the backend systems. My position required close communication and day-to-day working with the frontend team (developing mobile clients for iOS and other platforms) and a good understanding of the needs for mobile clients. I also interacted with the science group inside the company which used machine learning (ML) to drive the unique "likeness" architecture of Ness Computing. I introduced technologies such as continuous integration and continuous deployment to the engineering team and mentored the engineering team in the use of new technologies through personal communication and through company wide presentations and brown-bag events.I have introduced IoC architecture based on Google Guice and a general REST framework based on HTTP/Json using Jersey and Jackson and driven the effort to rebuild all services on top of these technologies.I started an initiative to use Apache Hadoop and subsequently Hive as a general analytics and data processing for the ML group. When working at a start-up, a wide variety of skill sets comes in handy when problems arise. I was able to apply a lot of the experience gained during my career in many places at Ness. -

I designed and built the backend system for a revolutionary new revenue stream on the Ning platform. Virtual gifts provided a significant revenue stream for Ning and the ability of the system to seamlessly scale with the growth of the Ning platform made it a reliable part of the Ning infrastructure.* Architect on Ning's "next generation" infrastructure initiative. Lead by the Ning CTO, this initiative was slated to build a next generation platform leveraging the experiences learned from the first generation platform. I was responsible for customer facing APIs which would have allowed third parties to build applications on top of the Ning platform. As a senior software engineer I was also responsible for mentoring team members, investigating and evaluating new technologies and providing guidance to the team as a whole.
