TecBio, "Training and Experimentation in Computational Biology", is a federally funded REU program (Research Experience for Undergraduates) in which students are assigned to mentors throughout the city of Pittsburgh to pursue a directed project. I worked in the lab of Dennis Kostka, at Children's Hospital. Working primarily in R, I classified mouse DNA sequences as either enhancer DNA sequences (i.e. regulatory) or not based on Gapped K-mers and a regularized logistic regression model. Due to the size of the dataset I was also required to work over the lab's computer cluster via SSH and furthermore I familiarized myself with parallel computing in R to increase the script's speed. This work was presented at the 2017 Duquesne University undegraduate symposium.
