We failed to raise the capital needed but had we made the leap to commercialisation and the large-scale uptake of our technology, we would be improving our planet and our chances of survival as a species. Founder, Managing DirectorAutomate Management Systems 1990 - 2000Nsw AustraliaDeveloped "AutoMate", a total business management solution for job-based & trade-based businesses in the automotive, marine, power equipment and light aircraft industries.A whole-of-business management software originally developed to help manage my three Bullitt Automotive sites in Dubbo, Wagga Wagga & Orange, 'AutoMate' soon had 3,500 businesses users and was so well-accepted that we sold off the automotive businesses and moved into the software industry. It was the first 'whole of business' solution providing accounting, job-costing, inventory management, customer relationship development, systems-based marketing and a unique 'eternal history' that made retrieval of past jobs (from years back) and long-term performance analysis simple and effective. AutoMate went on to establish customers throughout Australia, the Pacific and SE Asia, and won Australian DesignMark for excellence in 1995. Last updated in 2000, it still runs hundreds of businesses today. The program was over 1 million lines of DOS code (written in Clarion 5GL, it is twice the size of the NASA Space Shuttle code), and has proven itself 'mechanic-proof' - which is probably 3 grades higher than bullet-proof. ;-)For almost the entire 10 years of operation, I was involved in 'teaching & training' our licensees in various aspects of business, from basic bookkeeping and tax accounting, through to performance analysis, service protocols, productivity, leadership and more. It was deja vu as I'd been a TAFE Head Teacher of Commercial Studies back in the 70's, and here I was 'teaching again', which I'd always found fulfiling. So in 2001, with Y2K and GST having put a lot of cash in my bank account, I sold the source code and founded ProfiTune to go coaching. I'm still there.

Managing OwnerPro-Tech Fitness Equipment 1985 - 1990NswI had started using weights as a 15 year old and by 31 was the NSW Heavyweight Power Lifting Champion and record-holder. I last competed at age 65 (when, I've been reliably informed, I would have been internationally competitive 'in the women's 48kg class!' :-P In 1985, while still heavily involved in my Bullitt Automotive businesses (Dubbo, Wagga Wagga & Orange) I was asked by a mate where he could buy 'best of breed' equipment with which to outfit a new fitness centre. I foolishly said, "There is none - it's all designed with a set-square and the human body is rotary", whereupon he said, "Could you do better" to which I said, "Sure!" He called my bluff by laying down an order for $43,000 (a sizeable sum in the day) and so I bought a drafting board and sat down at my kitchen table every night for 6 weeks and designed a full suit of weight training equipment.I rented a factory, hired some people and went into production. I drew pretty heavily on the fitters-and-machinists I had working with me in Bullitt and we turned out ground-breaking equipment that set a new standard. BUT, it was an 'indulgence' and my lack of focus on Bullitt began to cost me money. So, after completing the third order, I closed down the operation and went back to my 'day job' running three very profitable automotive businesses. It was great fun. I wrote a loss of around $40,000 on the exercise, but it was worth every cent of that!

Owner ManagerBullitt Automotive 1975 - 1990Dubbo, Wagga Wagga, OrangeLaunched in 1975 with partner and friend Noel (Garry) Buckland, Bullitt was originally focused on transmission work - automatic and manual gearboxes, and a bit of differential work. Garry and I parted ways in 1977 and I established Bullitt in Orange then Wagga Wagga in the next 2 years. We diversified into power steering and became component 'remanufacturers', moved the bulk of the business away from 'repairs' and towards installing exchange units, which cut down on the time a vehicle was in the shop, maximised our control over the quality of work and enabled us to give the first 2-year then 3-year Guarantees in that industry. We were instrumental in having the NSW Gov introduce a "Transmission Specliast' license and pushed hard to raise the mandatory standards of qualification, equipment and operations for the automotive repair industry nationally. I was a founder of the Australian Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association (AATRA).One hightlight: We manufactured the first 12-speed automatic transmission for Toyota Landcruisers and were doing well with product until Toyota introduced their first automatic transmissions for the model and wiped out our market overnight. It had become a lucrative but small part of our business and we reallocated our resources to developing high performance vehicles - the Bullitt Falcon predated the Ford FPVs and Holden HSVs. Fun times.
