Isn't it weird that so many people use the third person in this space? Like, who is writing?For me, the best use of this space is personal anecdotes. I can read your AI-enhanced & embellished resume any time.I've been fortunate to have really fantastic writing & marketing mentors. One of them schooled me in TV news writing 20+ years ago, "Hilary, this isn't a PBS documentary. Sexy it up!" It was CNN, so it wasn't like it was THAT far from PBS. But, you write in dramatic sentence fragments, so it was valid. And my producer, "um, I saw that jump cut. Go re-edit that." What I love about marketing is that it's largely psychology + data. I've been calling it a pretty science. You may be looking at all the data and seeing your issues, but you can't solve those issues without fixing the front end creative. There's nothing more exciting than emailing improved content and watching the open rate climb. The same is true for ads - digital, print, yes print, CTV, linear TV, etc. One of the top questions I get is around ideas. I have a lot of ideas - how do you get ideas? #1 you have to have curiosity in your field, and even in tangential areas. If you want to learn, you read, listen & ask questions. I skim through many newsletters every day. #2 I used to have 'How to Steal Like an Artist' hanging in my office. When you ingest many ideas, your amazing brain will spit out iterations customized to your problem. Of course you can add your own twist, likely borrowing from another idea. Originality is dead! Long live originality. #3 Numbers: this is the most important part. Find data to support - or contradict - your gut and figure out who your audience is. Then make sure you're able to measure what you put out. Your ultimate goal is to grow revenue even if 'they' say it's not. Good luck and if you'd like to bounce ideas off me, I'd love to hear them!
