Summer Research Experience

Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand

I conducted research on the importance of tile drains as sources of nitrate to agricultural catchments as part of a Callaghan Innovation Undergrad internship. I carried out a comprehensive literature review and data compilation on tile drain locations and flow regime. This was followed by sampling events to take measurement of flow, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and temperature, along with water samples for analysis of dissolved nitrogen species, Escherichia Coli, dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), total suspended sediment (TSS) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). I carried out spectroscopic nitrate analysis in the laboratory, but water samples were also sent to Hills Laboratory. With help from Environment Canterbury Regional Council (ECAN)I identified: 1) The location of tile drains in the Silverstream catchment and their relative flow rates2) The flux of nitrogen species, E. coli, DRP, TSS, and DOC and the relative importance of the contaminant load from tile drains relative to diffuse sources in the catchment. 3) The impact of a heavy rainfall (or irrigation) event on water and contaminant flux from tile drains to surface waters This research helped answer questions regarding nitrogen dynamics within the lower Selwyn Catchment, thereby contributing to the implementation of water treatment technology currently in development by Verum Group. The project goals also aligned well and could be applied to the Swimmable Selwyn at Coes Ford program It was for this reason I was invited to attend and speak at the Silverstream Industry Workshop focussing on E.coli and the swimmable Selwyn at Coes Ford, Silverstream catchment meeting.

Camp Wayne is a traditional seven week, overnight camp for girls aged 7-15.
