Books for Keeps started as an effort to help one little girl who loved to read but didn't own a single book. It's grown into a grassroots movement to end "summer slide", a reading achievement deficiency caused by lack of reading over the summer break.In 2014, Books for Keeps expanded from 5 to 10 schools giving 45000 books to 3700 students. 8 of those schools in Athens-Clarke County, we also expanded to Freeman Elementary school in rural Warrenton and Dunbar Elementary in downtown Atlanta.In 2015, Books for Keeps announced a Strategic Plan to expand access to all Clarke Elementary schools, while continuing to expand into Atlanta Public Schools and rural school districts in GA. Plans are in place to double capacity by 2020.
