Companies like Uber, eBay, and Zalando automate and scale their online advertising with Smartly.io’s performance marketing platform.As the Chief Product Officer, I helped to scale the company from 30 to 350+ people. The product offering grew from Facebook ad buying to advanced analytics, optimization tools, and creative automation. In 2018 Smartly.io launched a Pinterest product, and now continues to expand to other platforms.I built and managed an organization of 100 professionals in 13 teams. In addition to eight full-stack product development teams, my organization included Product Management, Product Design, Product Marketing, Engineering Talent, and Infrastructure Engineering / DevOps. We built strong self-organizing teams with a customer-focused engineering culture.We grew to be a market leader in a highly competitive market and continuously launched new winning products. The engineering teams shipped changes to production continuously, and we successfully migrated to microservices architecture with tens of services on 1000+ server nodes.I was involved in how the company works on its strategy, sets goals, measures success, hires people, onboards them, celebrates victories, builds shared alignment, communicates, manages performance, compensates people and many, many other things. I built the first prototype of Smartly.io's award-winning video templates and implemented a Kubernetes-based development environment for working with tens of microservices.

Maria 0-1 is an industry hub for startups and VCs in central Helsinki located at an old hospital.I was a founding board member, and worked together with the City of Helsinki to kickstart the project. Nowadays Maria 0-1 is home to 1300 people working in hundreds of startups.

Startup Foundation was founded in fall 2012 together with fifty-seven serial entrepreneurs, investors and executives to support the nascent tech ecosystem in Scandinavia. The foundation is the legal entity behind many of the most significant entrepreneurial initiatives in the region, including the Slush conference, Junction hackathon, Maria 0-1 startup space, Startup Sauna accelerator, Wave Ventures student-run venture fund and The Shortcut diversity accelerator.During my time as the Chairman of the Board (2016 and 2017), the foundation grew from just supporting Slush and Startup Sauna to its current form.

After Rally Software acquired Flowdock in early 2013, I led the Team Collaboration products (Flowdock and AgileZen).I learned what it takes for an established company to start selling multiple products instead of one and how to drive that change. I worked closely with Product Marketing, SalesOps, Sales, Marketing, Security & Compliance, and Product & Engineering teams to bring the Flowdock Enterprise offering to the market.Joining a company right before the IPO was a great learning experience. I participated in the Extended Leadership Team and contributed to defining the company strategy.

In 2003 I wrote a web-based ticket sales system for Assembly, a Finnish computer festival.In 2005 I rewrote it in Ruby on Rails. It has advanced features like real-time seat reservation, electronic payments, e-tickets that are processed at the party place etc.I maintained it for 12 years, adding new features every year.

Flowdock is a chat-based team collaboration product that invented many aspects of modern business communication tools. It supports threaded group chat, hashtags for turning conversations to knowledge, and interactive integrations with other products. While studying how various teams and companies work, we also identified several organizational patterns for creating a modern transparent work environment.The product continues serving real customer needs even 10+ years after the initial prototype. Flowdock has been powering team communication at companies like Zendesk, Shopify, MongoDB, Pivotal Labs, TED Conferences, as well as numerous enterprises.We raised money from top Silicon Valley investors in 2011 and sold the company to Rally Software in 2013.

We started Nodeta with a few friends to be able to work on bigger software projects together. Back then, I didn’t know it was called entrepreneurship.Focusing on agile methods and Ruby on Rails as a technology in 2007 turned out to be a smart move, and we ended up building some world-class web and mobile services at the time.APIdock, a community-enhanced documentation site, was born as one of our side-projects, and it’s been helpful for the half a million monthly active users for a decade. Flowdock was also started based on the experimentation we did at Nodeta.

I did web software development (PHP, Java) and Unix administration (Linux, Apache, Tomcat).

As the first employee, I worked as a Software Architect / Lead Developer on a facility access and security system (written in C++). I worked together with an offshore software development team.

I developed a weather station monitoring system in Java.
