About Hira Fernando

Ms. Hira Fernando is a Swiss Sri-Lankan dual national - born in Sri Lanka, raised in Europe, and living - mostly - in the United States. Currently spending time between Washington D.C. and Sri Lanka, but never veering far from a laptop: teaching and coaching about one singular topic, jobs and careers. YOURS, to be specific. And how did that come about? Well, when you have worked in several industries in as many functional roles, eventually it's like having a Ph.D in Jobs, especially How to Get Them. Post L.LM, Ms. Fernando worked as young lawyer in Geneva covering international development & trade treaties for the UN, WTO, and related NGOs. Later, at the WRI and World Bank in Washington, she focused on (i) Climate Finance and Clean Energy, and (ii) Urban Development and Infrastructure... think of the quintessential image of WB loans for building big things like roads and ports... Ms. Fernando served on the team delivering the largest loans to the largest client, China. Prior to and since, Ms. Fernando worked for three major investment banks in equity sales & trading and client relationship management. Eventually veering towards research, clean tech, green supply chains, and CSR, with her final "traditional job" being Co-Lead Sustainability Analyst for Gartner Inc, where she authored or co-authored 41 pieces of primary industry research. Ms. Fernando founded Careerly in 2013 and grew it from one small university contract (and a staff of one- her) to an operation that by 2021 served 7200+ graduates, undergraduates, and alumni of Georgetown, GW, Johns Hopkins, SAIS , University of Maryland, Catholic University, and UVA's Darden School. More recently Ms. Fernando developed a 22-session career & job search curriculum that integrates the game-changing post-Pandemic work environment and delivered it through the Wharton Alumni platform. Ms. Fernando is a unique and popular voice, and has unusually high "buy-in" with the target market: candidates relate to her story. It doesn't hurt that she can leverage 16+ years worth of real-life industry intel to help them, having held the very jobs her clients want:- International development: United Nations, WWF, IUCN, ICTSD- Banking & brokerage: Merrill Lynch and Citigroup- Equity sales & trading: Lehman Brothers- Urban infrastructure lending China//East Asia: World Bank- Climate change, carbon finance, clean energy: World Bank and World Resources Institute- Green business, supply chain research, and client advisory: AMR Research- Industry research lead, publication, and client advisory: Gartner

    Ceo
Careerly Networks Apr 2017 - Present
    Washington D.C. Metro Area
Created a technology-based career platform to deliver Careerly services and products more efficiently and untethered to one physical place. The sub-platforms are www.careerlynetworks.com, www.careerlynetworks.net (mandarin Chinese) and www.careerlyuniversity.com. The latter is specifically set-up to partner with University Career Service Offices and help these internal teams advance their goals, which are typically twofold: (i) drive quality student engagement and (ii) increase job placement rates and employment opps. The key principle of our approach is industry experience. Replicating the founder's journey and subsequent winning value proposition, Careerly coaches operate on their work experience and industry knowledge. We all did or are doing the jobs that candidates are seeking. We leverage our direct on-the-job experience and the knowledge gained from competing for and securing the very roles that our students and graduate are pursuing. One of our greatest accomplishments was to secure Careerly's 28 industry coaches. They are based 70% US and 20% globally, each has industry experience in one or more of our eight verticals, and several are currently working FT at popluar companies like Amazon, Citi, BoA, JP Morgan, EY, Deloitte, Samsung, etc. Most of 2017-2018 was spend getting this team of 28 trained to standardized practices while respecting their areas of expertise, usng the best online technology for everything, and ensuring that quality of service delivery remained the same (or better) with the move to virtual. Ironically, 2020's global pandemic has put us on the frontlines. All that hard work early on meant we can smoothly navigate a 100% online operation for all aspects from career dev programming to content distribution to handling/teaching large classes to managing a hefty volume of individual one-on-one-coaching appointments.
