About Brian Ostrander
- Unity3D - Over the past 6 years, I have used Unity3D to develop products for Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and HTML5 platforms using Unity3D. I love the way Unity’s environment combines scripting and visual editing, opening the platform up to designers and programmers alike.- Languages - Writing C# is my bread and butter. I love LINQ, and won’t apologize for it. However, every language has its use case, and I’m also fluent in Python, JavaScript, Java, Ruby, Lua, and good old Bash scripting.- Shaders - Creating visually stunning effects with low-cost shaders is my specialty. My preferred tools are node-based editors like Shader Forge or the new Shader Graph.- Design - I’m well versed in the Adobe suite of tools, as well as 3D applications like Blender. I can whip up kick-ass videos, like I did for SubLight. I also create print media, including zines, t-shirts, and more.- Writing - For SubLight, I wrote in the science fiction genre with a focus on branching narratives and realistic dialogue. When writing for games, I am always looking for ways to promote inclusivity. I am particularly interested in the stories of diverse groups like the LGBTQ+ community, who until recently have been woefully underrepresented or misrepresented in games.
Listed skills include Unity3D, Game Development, Programming, Project Management, and 31 others.

Brian Ostrander work experience

Role listed
Senior Software Engineer
Lead Game Developer
For the previous year I took a sabbatical to work on SubLight, a single-player adventure survival game for Windows and MacOS. I developed this as a person- al project, with the desire to improve my design, programming, and storytelling skills. With the exception of sound effects and music, which I contracted out, I tackled SubLight as a solo endeavor. It is currently available as a playable alpha.
Vr & Ar Engineer
After the VRB Foto team was acquired by Samsung, we continued supporting our original product as well as working with new hardware being created by Sam- sung. I experimenting with Augmented Reality, creating proof of concepts for the technology using Unity3D. This work required working with the hardware and driver team, iterating and improving on the plugins they were creating for AR.
Game Developer
I established Lunra Games LLC to publish various Unity3D plugins to the Asset Store.
Software Engineer
I was part of a small startup incubated by, and later acquired by, Samsung. We published VRB Foto, a 360 photo-sharing app for Gear VR headsets. As a core member of the Unity3D team, I used my mixture of programming experience and design sensibilities to translate the creative team’s vision into a working product.
Front-End Lead & Unity3D Developer
I worked on and led a team porting a native Android app, Lucktastic, to Unity3D for iOS. Lucktastic is a sweepstakes scratch-off game with real cash prizes. The iOS version was not a straight port, but also a major improvement feature-wise and visually. It supported more than two dozen 3rd party plugins for advertising and analytics. Cooperating with the backend team was a major part of my job as well, since much of Lucktastic’s gameplay was driven by an AWS API.
Software Engineer
I took a prototype game from concept to fully functioning mobile shooter with multiplayer action on iOS & Android. Written in C# with Unity3D and a NodeJS backend for matchmaking, scoreboards, and microtransactions. Since our company was contracted for this work by a 3rd party, following a specifica- tion and meeting milestones on time was extremely important.
Programming Intern
Programming a web-scraping tool to gather information from facebook/social games on AppData.com, and turning it into an organized excel spreadsheet. The tool gathered thousands of demographic stats from these games, and formatted them into a single, well organized excel spreadsheet. This was done in Ruby.
Intern
After performing well the previous summer, I was invited back to Instant Action as a paid intern. I performed many of the same functions (beta testing, community support), and continued to develop an online presence for Instant Action.
Intern
I gathered information on competitors to Instant Action (a social game platform) and produced a presentation on how we could improve our platform based on that data. I also performed beta-testing on the games, gathered bug reports from the community, and other functions important to cultivating the platform's community.
