I led a global effort to inculcate customer-centered innovation practices into the company's DNA. My team transformed a culture of inside-out product creation into one rooted in customer empathy, problem framing, rapid concept testing and experimentation. In the process, I changed how executives think about their businesses and product lines to focus on what "jobs" people need to hire our products to help them get done and what the most critical customer outcomes/benefits are. And I re-defined how cross-functional product teams work -- from a hand-off model in which product managers gave requirements to designers and engineers, to a collaborative model in which designers, engineers and marketers are involved in a co-creation process from day one.Some of the ways this work made material impact include: time and millions of dollars saved by teams stopping bad ideas before building them into products; increased revenue and conversion rates from new innovative products and features; a customer-centered, clear strategy; an innovation pipeline for the consumer business; thousands of customer visits and interviews; a resurgence of the UX design role; increased employee engagement and talent retention.I was honored to receive the Customer Champion Award from the Chief Product Officer, Hill Ferguson. And I was thrilled to be entrusted by eBay Inc's Chief Communications Officer (Alan Marks) and CEO (John Donahoe) to introduce Design Thinking to eBay Inc's top 200 executives in a whole day of experiential learning.

Intuit Health is the industry leader in advancing provider and patient communication through online services. More than 2.5 million patients and 32,000 health providers use the Intuit Health patient portal. The SaaS offering simplifies everyday tasks such as making appointments, filling out paperwork, getting lab results, and paying medical bills.My role is to lead the following:1) Launch a new patient portal offering that's laser focused on delivering THE most critical customer benefit2) Materially improve the most important customer metric, patient-provider engagement, by deeply understanding customers to define their critical jobs and outcomes, analyzing their problems at the root cause level, and iteratively innovating our way to solutions customers love and recommend3) Improve end-to-end customer experience4) Build world-class product management capability in the BU

I led the product management (PM) function at a corporate level, driving excellence in PM across Intuit and aligning it with the company's long-term vision and strategy. My objective was to develop world-class product managers who are the world's best growth leaders. This required significant change that I drove by setting a vision and executing a strategy in collaboration with the senior leadership team and PM's from across Intuit. A few examples of change I accomplished are:1. Evolution of the PM role and its responsibilities to drive Intuit's innovation and business growth into the future2. Clear definition of the critical competencies and behaviors required to excel in the role at a world-class level3. Creation of metrics that make clear to the whole company how its product management function is performing and what needs to be addressed4. Creation of entrepreneurial teams of PM's from across the company who are learning to excel by doing and teaching5. Product Managers at all levels (entry-level to VP) are engaged, learning and themselves driving change throughout the companyWhat I did was never been accomplished before at Intuit... that's the kind of work I enjoy.

I joined the Quicken Solutions Group (QSG) because it was in a very exciting stage researching and funding new business ideas. I led one of the experiments -- a local business ratings service -- in a way that challenged many of Intuit's long-standing mindsets, cultural norms and infrastructure standards. Examples: team formation to working code in production in weeks; requirements through design prototypes and customer empathy, not detailed requirements docs; move people out of offices and co-locate team in a specially reconstructed large conference room; tight cross-functional team with regular team immersions.Aside from my leadership of this initiative, I was also a leader across the BU. As a member of the BU leadership team, I helped set teams and the BU up for success. I also became acting leader of the product management group for a period and was credited for stabilizing it, re-establishing its position in the BU and re-engaging all PM's. My accomplishments in QSG resulted in a promotion to Director of Product Management.

I co-founded the Intuit Developer Network (http://developer.intuit.com), leading a mindset, strategy and skills change in the company that culminated in numerous product SDK's and a platform strategy. This was the most fun I've had, and marked the beginning of my experience in product management and business leadership. While I worked on establishing IDN as a whole, my primary responsibility was to lead the product side. Within a few weeks we had a QuickBooks integration vision, strategy and v1 XML spec, all of which we shared with developers at our first developer conference in the Fall of 2000. Within a couple of years, we had thousands of 3rd party developers creating valuable solutions for small businesses. With the QuickBooks SDK well established, I influenced the creation of SDK's for Intuit's small business payments service and POS product all while making the case for a small business developer platform. Today, the developer network is thriving, Intuit has a developer platform business and, most importantly, the notion of enabling 3rd party developers is mainstream at Intuit.

To move back to the Bay Area from San Diego, I took a transitional role as a program manager for several Intuit-wide technology projects.

I ran Engineering and QA teams responsible for the design, development, deployment and operation of a number of critical systems. Here are two examples:I led the creation of the company's first Web-based product registration system that enabled shifting registration from phone to Web for millions of QuickBooks, Quicken and TurboTax customers.I led the re-architecture and drastic improvement of the company's single sign-on system to meet current security standards and the evolving requirements of TurboTax, Quicken and other online properties.

I led an engineering team in porting the new Oracle Video Server on the SGI and Siemens powerful server platforms. Oracle was so impressed with the outcome we achieved on SGI, it decided to make it the reference platform for OVS...switching from its original Sun platform.This product was to be deployed in several to-the-curb interactive TV pilots, mostly in Europe.

In my last position at SCO, I took a lead R&D role to drive the design and creation of a next generation UNIX licensing model for the company's flagship product line. I drove the requirements, technology partnership and internal implementation of a sophisticated, network-based licensing system that set the company up for growth and offered customers a drastically improved purchase experience and tailored pricing options.This work required the effective engagement of just about every function: Engineering, QA, Marketing, Finance, Program Management, Sales, and Partner Management. The successful outcome of this project had immediate impact on the business and customers.

I loved starting out my career being an OS engineer! I spent some time creating tools and utilities and improving subsystems. I also worked in the UNIX kernel to improve speed and quality. Then I was asked to help lead a new strategic initiative to re-imagine and re-invent the UNIX administration experience -- at the time, it was command line and script-based. We created SCOAdmin, a windows-based system. The work I produced quickly became the model for the rest of the initiative.
