H. Joseph Yost, PhD, is the inaugural Senior Vice Provost for Research at The Catholic University in Washington DC, with the goal of elevating the university from its current Carnegie R2 status to a nationally recognized top-tier R1 research university. Dr. Yost is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement for Science (AAAS), a Fellow of the American Association for Anatomy (AAA), an inaugural Fellow of the Society for Developmental Biology (SDB) Academy, and recipient of numerous other awards recognizing his research, leadership and commitment to mentorship.Dr. Yost previously held the Richard L. Stimson Presidential Endowed Chair at the University of Utah and served as Vice Chairman for Basic Science Research in Pediatrics and Professor of Neurobiology, and is now Professor Emeritus at the University of Utah. His research is at the intersection between model organism embryology, genetics and the discovery of novel disease-causing mutations in human genomes, focusing on congenital heart disease (CHD), embryonic origins of adult-onset heart disease, and pediatric rare diseases such as Kabuki Syndrome. His work includes building and deploying national databases and developing bioinformatics tools. Dr. Yost has extensive experience in a variety of life sciences research approaches and model organisms, including zebrafish, Xenopus, mice, Drosophila, yeast, human iPSC cell culture and human genetics. He has a long-term commitment to mentoring the next generation of researchers, and his former trainees are leaders of their own research teams as tenured or tenure-track faculty, or pursuing successful careers in medicine, biotechnology, bioethics, public policy or law.
