Lanny Floyd joined DuPont in 1969 and retired at the end of 2014 as Principal Consultant - Electrical Safety & Technology and Global Electrical Safety Competency Leader. For the last 30 years with DuPont career his responsibilities focused on electrical safety in construction, operation and maintenance of DuPont facilities worldwide. He had responsibility for improving management systems, competency renewal, work practices, and application of technologies critical to electrical safety performance in all DuPont operations. From 1992 to 2015, he led the team that designed and facilitated implementation of a strategy for continuous and sustainable improvement in occupational electrical safety for DuPont Global Operations. This work enabled breakthrough performance in prevention of serious injuries and fatalities from electrical energy. With the implementation of these advanced methods of electrical safety management, there have been zero electrocution fatalities for both employees and contractors since 1993, now over 21 years. Prior to implementation of electrical safety management, the company was experiencing an average of one electrical fatality every 33 months. Actively involved in professional organizations spanning electrical engineering, occupational health & safety, and maintenance & reliability, he has authored or co-authored more than 70 papers and articles and has given more than 150 presentations at conferences, seminars and webcasts in his work to advance the practice of electrical safety. Lanny has provided technical leadership in development of codes and standards, including the National Electrical Code, the Canadian Electrical Code, NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, CSA Z462 Workplace Electrical Safety, and IEEE 902 Guide for Maintenance, Operation and Safety of Industrial and Commercial Power Systems. It is based on and was developed in parallel with U.S. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standard NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. Attempts have been made to harmonize Z462 with NFPA 70E as much as practicable for Canadian workplaces. CSA Z462 is the Canadian standard that addresses electrical safety requirements for employees. It provides guidance on the assessment of electrical hazards and design of safe work spaces around electrical power systems. It stipulates requirements for identifying hazardous equipment and for the development of safe work procedures around this equipment. This standard also gives guidance to electrical workers on the selection of personal protective equipment and protective clothing for protection from electrical arc flash hazards.Lanny Floyd led the working group that wrote Annex A, providing guidance on integrating an electrical safety program within the framework of a safety management systems standard such as CSA Z1000, ANSI Z10 and OHSAS 18001. -
