Harald M. Hjelle obtained his first academic degree in Transport Economics at MRDH, Norway, in 1986. He received his lower university degree in economics at the University of Oslo in 1987. At this point he also started as a research assistant at the Institute of Transport Economics (TØI) in Oslo. He received his major in Economics at the University of Oslo in 1989. From then he worked as a researcher at TØI, mainly with transport demand modelling (logit models) and external transport cost estimation. In 1990 he completed a class in discrete choice modelling at MIT, Mass. USA. From 1992 he was appointed as an assistant professor of economics at Molde University College (MUC), Norway. Since 1992 he has also worked as a researcher for Molde Research Institute (MFM). Projects at MFM have been related to transport infrastructure policy, transport pricing, public transport, regional transport policy planning, economic impact assessment in aviation, railways and roads. In 2003 Hjelle was awarded the degree of PhD at The Norwegian University of Technology and Science in Trondheim, Norway – with the thesis “A foundation for road user charges”. Following this achievement he was appointed as an associate professor in economics at MUC. Dr Hjelle has had several managerial positions at MUC, including positions as head of institute, pro-rector and vice-rector for research . He has been project leader of several commissioned research projects, funded by entities like the Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications, The Research Council of Norway and the EC. Dr Hjelle has published academic peer-reviewed papers in journals like Transport Reviews and Maritime Policy & Management. He has supervised PhD students and led or participated in PhD and professorship evaluation committees. He is member of boards and steering committees related to research institutes and programmes. As of November 2015 Dr. Hjelle was appointet full professor in transport economics at MUC.
