Engineer

Current

Franklin, Pennsylvania

Joy manufactures mine equipment. Engineering develops new product and supports OEM and rebuild.Entry Development (04/2010-)Team formed to support and design a larger 14ED machine. Developed a dust system and multiple platforms. Analyzed major pieces. Interact with many levels of personnel in/outside of the company/country.Product Development (11/1998-04/2010)Team creates significantly new product. Two miners/batch hauler were created. Hauler was battery powered eliminating cable handling / reducing mine logistic. 1st miner allowed simultaneous bolting/cutting. Developed work area and cutting linkage. Led personnel in testing machines loading ability. Shortfalls addressed in next miner. Laid out work area, dust, conveying, sumping systems, and approved canopy. Tracked budget, parts stock, and cost.Haulage (11/1997-11/1998)Team supports batch/continuous product. New chain haulage introduced. Did analysis on carrier/conveyor chassis. Visited mines to define expectations. System introduced in US/South Africa.Electrical (10/1996-11/1997)Team designs electrical systems - regulatory/customer specific. Power controls cut, tram, and load, and safety controls light, fault, and methane systems.Project ManagementI was assigned a team to create a high capacity hauler. Responsible for specifications, development, budget and cost, and team direction. Steering and power systems were evaluated.RegulatoryExpanded UL, CSA, IEC experience with NIOSH and MSHA. For MSHA developed a staged canopy and dual drill single vacuum dust system. For NIOSH I tested concepts to lower noise exposure. ManufacturingBuilt upon mass production experience with that of custom equipment. Where lines made thousands of units/ month, new miner could take a year from concept to shipment.Testing I directed large scale tests: mine face for loading/ventilation, friction tests for material selection, slide frames for cable wear, mine bottom for skid/clad steering, and MSHA and NIOSH tests above.

Nov 1996 - Present

Senior Engineer

Eaton - Cutler Hammer

Beaver, Pennsylvania

General Responsibilities Eaton-Cutler Hammer is a manufacturer of industrial and residential circuit breakers. I was assigned to the plant and was responsible for maintaining the production and UL, CSA, and IEC listings for the SPB product line. This is an industrial circuit breaker rated 800 to 5,000 amps at 600 volts. Professional Growth In addition to building upon my regulatory, lab, manufacturing, and supervisory experience I had developed during my years at Siemens I was also exposed to unique problems associated with the Southeast Asian marketplace. SPB breakers were generally shipped all over the world in cardboard and Styrofoam packaging. The high humidity of the region coupled with long delivery times often degraded the cardboard to the point of failure prior to the customer taking possession of product. Over this period I worked with several vendors familiar with shipping product into humid environments. Through this effort a vendor was found capable of delivering our product successfully to this market.

Jun 1996 - Oct 1996

Product Engineer

Siemens Energy And Automation

Bellefontaine, Ohio

General Responsibilities Siemens produces industrial and residential circuit breakers. I maintained the production of several product lines The BQD lighting breakers, Pushmatic residential line, the J-Frame line, the L-Frame line, and the LMD line. I was to maintain the production and quality of existing product and to liaison with the design center in Atlanta. I interacted with inspectors to maintain the UL, CSA, and IEC listings for these products. I introduced four new lines to the plant - the BQD, the J(-A), L(-A), and LMD (-A) products. For the BQD line I was formally recognized and placed on the 'High Performer's List'.Regulatory/Lab Experience My experiences were identical to those from my co-op days listed below with responsibility of multiple product lines, I also supervised lab technicians. Manufacturing Experience Batches of product were sampled regularly and non-compliant test results could stop shipment of product. My objective was the implementation of quality checks prior to assembly. This required a working knowledge of the product and the manufacturing process. From this I was able to implement testing protocols to sort out potential problems prior to final assembly.Supervisory Experience In addition to lab personnel I supervised my product lines when line foreman where on holiday. Through this I leanred how to solve the daily issues which hamper manufacturing and also the human personality conflicts which could jeopardize team performance. Professional Growth I was exposed to many professionals: from line personnel, plant managers and vice presidents. I developed the people skills necessary to work with each. Line personnel trusted that I would resolve any issues they had and management trusted I ship both quality and quantity of product. I learned the process in total: evaluating vendors, trouble shooting supply chain, and working with others to reduce cost without reducing quality.

Jun 1993 - Jun 1996

Co-Op Engineer

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

General Responsibilities Westinghouse is a manufacturer of industrial and residential circuit breakers. The miniature circuit breaker line consisted of residential breakers, 120 to 360 volts, 10 to 225 amps, 50 or 60 Hz , for use in the US, Canadian, European, and Mid-East market places. This team was responsible for maintaining the UL, CSA, and IEC listings for this product line as well as developing and introducing new product. My responsibilities were primarily in testing and evaluation. During this period the instantaneous trip characteristics for existing product were improved and a new, all electronic and narrower, ground fault circuit breaker was introduced. Regulatory and Lab Experience In testing and evaluating product for international marketplaces I was required to be familiar with the electrical standards regarding endurance, overload, and short circuit performance within these markets. To maintain listings I had to periodically test product to ensure compliance. I also had to evaluate new product to ensure that it could be smoothly introduced into market. Through this I was introduced to lab equipment ranging in simple electromechanical devices which turn breakers on and off under load to power transformers capable of delivering 10k amps to simulate a short circuit. Personal Growth During my three years at Westinghouse my confidence continued to grow. At the age of 21 I found myself working with equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars while simultaneously evaluating tests and suggesting improvements on product that protected not only wiring and equipment but also human life. My technical knowledge improved as I was able to connect the theoretical knowledge acquired through my studies with real world applications. Through this I was able to migrate from working under the supervision of experienced personnel to working independently and ultimately training the next generation of co-op students.

Lead Processor

Mellon Bank

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

General Responsibilities Mellon Bank is a provider of wholesale lock box accounts to numerous companies. As a processor it was my responsibility to arrange the account information of several dozen companies per each customer specification. This was done for numerous transactions, typically 1,000 or more, per day. Supervisory Experience In becoming a lead processor I was given the additional responsibility of the supervision of twelve processors. In addition to my own accounts I had to be able to answer any questions regarding their accounts and ensure that they were handling their transactions in a timely and accurate fashion. This was accomplished thru monthly reviews which included customer feedback, as well as quantitative measures of errors per thousand of checks processed and quantity of checks processed. Personal Growth During my two years at Mellon Bank my confidence in my ability to set and achieve goals, as well as my confidence to learn new skills and work with others towards a common goal, grew significantly. I was able to work weekends and evenings while simultaneously attending university during the day. This allowed me to both self finance as well as pursue my degree in engineering. In addition the formal recognition in the form of a promotion to lead processor reinforced my talents as well as pushed me to interact with personnel in an entirely new way.
