After a career in industry as a developer on Unix, AS400 and PC platforms, I started my own company in 1995 (Alétheia bvba.), building a local ISP, hosting clients, developing websites and applications. In 2005 I sold the customers of my company to Tales Systems and became a full-time lecturer at Howest, specializing in operating systems, computer networking, critical thinking, creativity and entrepreneurship.Since 2008 research is part of my job description. From 2008 until 2010 the most important project I worked on was about open source in the Flemish SME landscape. From 2010 on our research group executed another project with a broader perspective. Based on an article by Prof. Dr. Charles Petri from Stanford University, we have studied the practical applicability of a theory about emergent collectives. In 2012 I curated the first TEDxUHowest event around this theme with Charles Petri as one of the speakers.The emergent collective research project resulted in a follow-up project sponsored by the European Social Fund and the Flemish Community around the applicability of this concept for the labor markets (2011-2014). Some time later another project was initiated on my initiative for the same instance called Loreco (Local Regenerative Economies) which ran from 2019 to 2023.On a more organizational level I also helped realize the move from Bruges to Kortrijk of the Network Economics track. This entailed the reorganization of the entire curriculum and the promotion of this track to the larger public. This was my main focus between 2017 and 2021.Currently I am engaged in a research project (AID – AI in design) concerning generative AI. Being a philosopher by education, I am primarily concerned with the ethical and juridical aspects of the research project. The project started in September 2023 and aims to produce guiding on the practical and ethical use of generative AI for small and medium sized enterprises in Belgium, Europe and the world.
